Paul smart enough or selfish enough not to do anything rash: it's fascinating that you interpret it this way, because imo this is exactly how John sees it, though not necessarily how it was. The whole story of Paul, John and Yoko playing out the real life version of She loves you for which as of last year we have Yoko's confirmation in addition to Paul's from MYFN is to me one of the most extraordinary events of the whole saga. Not least because it showcases different understandings of love. You can also take the pov that Paul helping to reconcile John with Yoko was the most selfless thing he ever did, because it prioritized John's needs and happiness over his own (John was never as accessible to Paul as during the Lost Weekend, and Paul definitely liked May Pang better as a person - hell, he invited her to Linda's memorial service, and she's among the people ( ... )
