It was only called FFIII here for "consistancy" in the game series nomenclature. Which, as mentioned before, was thrown out the window.
I refer to it as US FFIII on occassion but FFVI is still my normal use.

As for the DS game (it was released for DS right? Or maybe the GBA, whatever), then use 6 to refer to that game, but the SNES game that you own is called 3. That's what Squenix called it when they sold it to you.

I find this to be completely retarded, because it robs children of the excitement of revelation that occurs when you read The Magician's Nephew after you've read almost everything else. C.S. Lewis was a crabby old man. It would be like J.R.R. Tolkein insisting that no one should read The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings without having read The Silmarillion first. And as we all know, that would be completely stupid.
