Viva La Hipster

Jun 08, 2007 09:44

It's old now, but Time Out New York (hereafter referred to as TONY) had a campaign last week against, of all people, hipsters.  "The hipster must die" the article read, as if people (even self-described "sort of hipster-ish myself" people) haven't been saying this since Pulp released Different Class in 1995.  Probably earlier than that, even ( Read more... )

I think that the writer probably has all the characteristics of a hipster, yeah. But he feels like his likes and dislikes aren't so much affected as the hipsters' are. Of course, he can't know what goes on in the hipsters' heads. And we don't know that he's not a big ol' ball of affectation either.

That's the thing with hating hipsters, it's hard to tell who's a hipster and who just really likes old school Nintendo.

But we've (and by "we" I mean America as a sweeping generalization, not you or I specifically) already made the bohemian lifestyle glamorous. And not just poverty but stupidity too ( ... )

I don't know that the media glamorizes anything that the people don't already sort of want already. I mean, isn't that denying the effects of capitalism. The media only gives us what we want, because if they didn't they wouldn't get any money.

But anyway. So, if I may, can I ask if there isn't an aspect of jealousy in your objection? After all, you're not paying their tab, their parents are. You stand to lose nothing for their lack of ambition. Is it not at least partly that you wish you had had the benefits growing up that the hipsters did and chose to squander?

But also, I don't think that you stand to lose any credit for your hard work. I mean, non-hipsters still completely respect hard work. So hipsters don't. So what? You don't like them anyway. I really don't think that anyone thinks hipsters are cool except for hipsters.

I avoid them like rodents. Rodents in 500 dollar jeans that look like 4 dollar jeans.

I've never understood why they don't just buy 4 dollar jeans and spend the other 496 dollars on a new guiter or a load of blow or whatever hipsters have to spend money on.

I totally fail to understand what you're talking about.

Over here (.au), "hipster" is a type of jean. I've heard seppos mentioning hipsters a lot - I'd assumed it was a class of person who liked to wear low-slung jeans.

It appears there's a bit more to it than that though.

Oh, over here hipsters are these losers who dress as though they're poorand don't shower and love David Lynch movies and listening to Bloc Party and comb in that swoop that goes over one eye.

I don't know who David Lynch is, nor Bloc Party...

I think I know the swoop though. The mental image that seems to go with that in my head is emos though..
