What that passage does is capture well the hopelessness and active decomposition that is death in the physical sense. However, these aren't things which we're unaware of.
Remember that day where we decided that death must be an awakening of sorts, and to think anything else just breeds pessimism? I have to keep that ideal alive in my thoughts; to think otherwise would betray what little part of zen I strive for. I think that in a way, this is waht the author means at the end, by stating that there must be immortality. What good comes from morbid premonition?
Nice choice of passage, excellent merit. But as for it's ability to inspire fear... I gotta disagree on this one. Maybe it's just because I'm a ninja, too. I'm not sure.
