My initial suspicion-and I say this only as a casual student of medieval history, so I wouldn't really know either-is that allergies would've been perceived as devilish trickery of some sort, not unlike the witchcraft element suggested here. Then again, maybe they just thought people got all big and puffy for no reason every once in a while. DAMN GIRL GOT DEM ILL HUMOURS UP IN HERE AGAIN
Before I saw the title of that strip, I assumed the shellfish had just gone off, and the last panel was an exaggerated depiction of being just about to spew.
I love Medieval Lives too. The one about monks was amazing; there is so much stuff I did not know about those cheeky monks. They invented sign language so they could talk about dinner even though they'd taken vows of silence! That's just cheating, really.
