It's so that we don't have to pay for food during orientation. Alas, if we lose or break the wristband (which, to be fair, is stronger than most paper, but still not on the level of, say, plastic), we have to pay $10 to replace it. At least now I know why entrance to amusement parks is so expensive... XD
Aaw, Freshman Orientation! That makes me so nostalgic. I'm just entering my Senior year now, and it seems both a lifetime ago and just yesterday that I was shuffling between orientation activities. Of course, yours sound a little more dull than mine were, though even the "social mixers" were more people standing around awkwardly in an overcrowded room and clinging to the few people they knew. You meet people that first week that you assume will be part of your social circle all year, and then you end up rarely seeing half of them and forgetting who they were in a few months. From my experience, that first week or two is filled with this odd sense of community, daring, and excitement that exists alongside a vague sense of overwhelmed panic and intense awkwardness. There's really nothing like it, but after a month or so, everything settles down
