The Old Gods and the New

This evening's Game of Thrones raised more questions in my mind.

Here there be dragons . . . errr . . .

Theon convinces Bran Stark to surrender Winterfell, promising not to harm anyone. Then he promptly breaks his word. Ser Rodrik had spit upon Theon in front of his men, so he must personally execute Rodrik to save face. Later, Osha the Wilding gives herself to Theon in exchange for her freedom. When Osha sneaks out, she brings Hodor, Bran, Rickon and the wolves with her. They run for it.

Thoughts: I wish she had killed Theon, while he slept. It would have solved many problems--and it's not like she was going to stay. Where are they going?

King Joffrey and his family are progressing through King's Landing, when he's hit with a cow pie. Petty and vicious, he orders his guards to kill the common people. The (starving) people riot. The Lannisters flee to safety, leaving Sansa behind. The guards won't obey Tyrion's order to go back for her, nor will Joffrey send a rescue party. Sandor Clegane rescues Sansa from a fate worse than death.

Thoughts: Did Tyrion go too far when he slapped Joffrey? Did Sandor act on general principles or was it something more?

Ser Amory catches Arya stealing one of Tywin's war council parchments. She escapes and convinces Jaqen him to kill Amory asap. Unfortunately, Amory dies in front of Tywin.

Thought: Arya is safe, but now Tywin knows there's an assassin in Harrenhal.

Arya serves wine to Littlefinger.

Thought: Did Littlefinger recognize her, when she spilled the wine, or was he too involved in his conversation with Tywin to notice a mere serving girl?

Robb and Catelyn get a message that Theon betrayed the Starks and captured Winterfell. Robb wants to retake Winterfell, but Bolton convinces Robb not to give up his strategic advantages over the Lannisters. Bolton will send a relative to recapture Winterfell.

Thought: Can Robb trust this unknown Bolton relative to return Winterfell after it's been recaptured?

Qhorin and the Night Watch party capture a Wilding outpost. Qhorin gives Jon a chance to prove himself, by executing their prisoner, Ygritte, a Wilding woman. Jon can't execute a woman, which allows her to escape. Jon recaptures Ygritte, but the long chase has separated him from the main party. He's lost and night is falling.

Thought: Does Ygritte like Jon enough to not kill him while he sleeps?

Dany meets with The Spice King of Qarth, the owner of a vast fleet of ships. With his ships, she vows to take the throne that is hers and will repay him threefold after she is Queen. The Spice King has no faith in her dreams of glory. He refuses her request for ships. She is furious and indignant!

Thoughts: Maybe Dany shouldn't have been so rude to The Spice King. He made several good points for his refusal: she has no army, no monies, and no sworn supporters in Westeros.

When she and Xaro return to his mansion everyone is dead. A trail of bodies leads to Dany’s bedroom. All her dragons have been stolen.

Thought: Who was that thief in the hoodie and where was (s)he taking the dragons?

This was filmed in Iceland and Dubrovnik.

Thought: Iceland looked unbelievably cold; no need for the actors to act cold. And Dubrovnik looked so warm, and sunny, and medieval. I love their locations. They’re so much better than plastic palms, Styrofoam rocks, and CGI.
