Job Search panic/Discouragement/Rant

So I am feeling very discouraged.  I graduated from college in May and I still am not working full time.  I am lucky to have a temp job, but right now it is really getting me down.   If I wanted to be a temp, I didn't need to go to college.   I went to college so I wouldn't have to put up with this menial labor.  It was fine when I was only going ( Read more... )

I feel for you. I remember graduating in January 1981 (just as the 1981-82 recession was ramping up) and not getting my first post-college job until June. And even then I had a crappy boss and crappy pay and got laid off eight months later. Oh, well.

The economy's not the best right now and I know how it sucks to graduate at such a time, but things always turn around eventually.

*hugs* If my employer gets some openings in the meetings & conventions department, you'll be the first to know!

I know how you feel. I know that it really is the job market right now. It just sucks. I feel the same way about how frustrating it is to not find a job. I am still looking as well.

I know what you are going through. I've been unemployed for quite some time. I'm 39 years old with almost 20 years of solid supervisory experience and I'm living in my parent's basement because I can't find work. (I finally had to accept a temp job.)
Just today, I went to pay my insurance bill and the agent said her son and his wife/kids are living in her basement for the same reason.

I know it's tough, but don't get down on yourself. It's not you, it's the economy. Here in Virginia, employers are receiving over 100 job applications for open positions, and it must be even worse up where you are. That's just impossible to compete with.

Well, here I am trying to offer support and I'm probably just making it worse. Just keep in mind - if you were smart enough to graduate college, you are smart enough to get a great job. It just might take some time under the current circumstances.

I know that people go on about how the DC area is "recession-proof", but they're sorely mistaken. If an agency's budget drops, then its civil servants might get cut & their contractors lay people off.
