[Personality] Uo is commonly described by others as a "Yankee"--rather rude Japanese slang for a juvenile or female gangster. And, in fairness, it's not a completely inaccurate description: she is a former gangster, after all, and she tends to be loud, hot-tempered, and rough in addition to still dressing Yankee-style. But Uo's not just a typical angry-with-life teenager. She was once before, perhaps: resenting her position in life, in her mother's leaving and her father's turning to his drink. She grew up lonely, angry, and desperate to be loved, but without knowledge of how to find what she wanted. So she turned to relying on gangs as an outlet for her anger and pretence for a family.
But it wasn't a family, and deep down Uo could feel that. Slowly she begins to let go of her anger when she meets Tohru and Kyouko--her idol--and begins to find a "place" and "family". She quits her gang and starts taking care of her father, not taking his crap and lecturing him to stop drinking and get to work.
Uo doesn't really take anyone's crap, not just when it's relating to her father. She's short-tempered (especially when she's hungry), gets into arguments easily, causing her to clash time and time again with Kyou. Not that she necessarily dislikes Kyou, but in many ways they're too much alike. She loves teasing him, giving him as hard of a time as she can because she finds him easy to bait and doing it fun. She teases Tohru, too, mostly about falling in love but often about anything that might make the other girl flail, calling her reactions cute. She plays well off Hanajima when it comes to this, engaging the other girl to find more material for teasing.
Uo has been described as a person who's just "honest with her emotions": she gets angry and shouts without thought, speaks bluntly, cries easily, laughs just as easily. She doesn't give much of a care about being polite in situations so much as she does about just letting her emotions go. Not that she's necessarily emotional--she doesn't have violent mood swings, and the smallest things don't affect her--but she doesn't hide what she's feeling. What's the point in being dishonest with yourself and others?
She may "cry easily", but her tears rarely have anything to do with herself. She sobs quite constantly over Tohru, lamenting even silly things in her friend's life (like lacking a swimsuit besides the one issued by their school), as well as old people in convenience stores, but when it comes to herself Arisa is very strong. Most of this strength was fostered by Kyouko and through her friendship with Tohru, but Uo's very good about accepting hardships and making the most of them. Even when she struggles with her relationship (if it can be called that) with Kureno, she gets mad rather than sad and rants about "sending him flying".
Uo's not exactly a planner and very "ehhh" with her future--when asked by her teacher what she was thinking about doing as a job, she gave an answer off the top of her head because Tohru had suggested it earlier. She tends to take life as it comes in that department, but she does a very good job of living in the moment, working two part-time jobs in addition to school. Despite that, though, she seems to be bright (or relatively so), having not failed any classes in three years when Tohru and Hana both had problems with grades (her philosophy was "if you don't want to do the makeup test, then just pass it the first time).
All in all Uo very much cares for Tohru and will do anything to protect her. The girl's a precious friend, and Uo doesn't plan to let her go any time soon.
