sunday night Jess and i went out to eat and saw, in this order(let me first mention is was 65 degrees on sunday): some guy peddling through traffic on one of those old tyme bikes with a one huge wheel and one tiny wheel in the back; spring breakers yelling things like "oooow" and "duuuude"; plenty of couples in matching jogging gear/windbreakers; ( Read more... )

Todd Purple is always looking for 70's era Boston punk and power-pop stuff, but I don't think he has much luck finding it either.

It's funny, for some reason lately Kess-lar has been talking about watching The Decline of Western Civilization, even though he's a hippie and is always talking about how he doesn't like punk or punks. He's always about to put it in, but then we get distracted and forget to watch it.

The Orbits do that song that's like "you gotta make the rules", right? I like that song. I thought there might be more than one Orbits, but I guess not. It makes sense that there are a couple different bands called The Pop, but why are there so many bands called Blitz? There's two Blitz, a Blitzz and a Blitz Boys that I know of. There's three The Scene all from the UK around the same time. It's weird the names that are desirable in power pop.

yeah thats the orbits. i wanna play a bunch of this stuff when i DJ in milwahhkee, i hopes i guess that someone will recognize it and be real happy. i remember how great it was to hear boston stuff in boston. it's weird djing here and playing dirty water, or roadrunner and nobody knows it.

Oh yeah, have you seen/do you have any of the hyped2death comps? There's one called "Teenline" that's all American powerpop stuff. The other (non-powerpop) comps look pretty good too; I've got a UK mod powerpop punk-pop one from a series called "bad teeth" that I guess is now out of print. Also you can get the Shivvers' album on CD (though I don't know what the story with their CDs is, if it's a reissue or a bootleg reissue or a CD-R or what). It's weird how they have 3 separate compilation series for powerpop, punk, and DIY "punkwave" all from the U.S. Serge was the one who first told me about the comps and I guess when he told Dan about them Dan said they were put together by the guy who owns (owned?) Second Comings Records, which could be true since the guy's address is Westminster(!) Maybe that's why it's so hard to find that sort of record in Boston.

yeah i've seen the teenline comps, but haven't gotten any of them yet. i saw someone with a bunch of them the other night, and actually the hyped to death cd, thats the shivvers album i got. i remember seeing that website before i moved and wondering if i could go to his house, or if maybe it was auggie doggie's dad or neighbor or something.

Yeah, I was thinking about going to his house too. Myabe he'd have stuff to sell? But if he does own Second Comings he'd sell it there or otherwise on eBay so I guess there wouldn't be much point in visiting him, except to talk to him about tunes.

I guess I'm not just interested in powerpop anymore, but any obscure 70s punk, powerpop, pop-punk, mod revival, punk-pop, DIY, new wave, punkwave, art punk, or post-punk band that's GOOD. Basically any good song could sort of be considered powerpop. I'm afraid I'm going to really dive in and get carried away, which is why I keep saying I'm trying not to listen to powerpop. I'm afraid I'm becoming one of those "killed by death" guys. Could be worse. Still I'm diverting my attention with 60s psych garage bands (the Nuggets comps aren't enough) and in the spring probably with reggae, but shit, that's such a HUGE can of worms, I don't even know where to start since I don't know anything about reggae.

oh i forgot to tell you that i got a yachts album this weekend too -- the one with yachting types on it. all the songs are about as good as the 2 songs on that DIY comp. just about every song features the organ. whats really funny about it is whoever recorded it let the record skip in at least 3 songs, and you can hear them flick the needle. maybe annoying, but i think it's cute ( ... )
