Your iChat problem can be solved easily, under the VIEW menu, choose "Sort by Availability." As for your hard drive problem, I'm having the same problem- but I do believe it's OSX's insistence upon using virtual memory (Emergency RAM on you hard drive), and the memory-intensive OSX programs really suck up RAM, if it dips too low, restart your compy, and the virtual memory will be reset to some degree.
My hard drive went to 16KB last night. iTunes couldn't even save the library.
hahah. funny thing...that thing with the iTunes, JUST HAPPENED TO ME! i seriously was getting pissed that my mac was telling me i had zero disc space for anything...then i went to my finder and found that i had like three copies of a recover cd, for example. 3 copies of each track! RIDICULOUS! then i had tons of stuff from the summer that was just sitting there and i thought i had deleted. i was in that boat too, it's such a relief isn't it? haha. oh yeah, how are things sir? i didn't see you when i got back from san diego.
