i'm getting on my soap box. ready? ok, here we go.
first off, i think you're underestimating yourself. you've made it this far and i have not a single doubt in my mind about you getting into grad school. maybe it won't be columbia, but you will get into grad school. i've seen some of your writing, and i very much believe that the schools you're applying to will be able to see what kind of writer you are. and, besides, if you get rejected from columbia, i'll be right next to you with my letter of rejection! wee!
second, don't let that shitty adviser bring you down. he obviously doesn't care much for his job or his students if he can't even give the time of day to his thesis advisee. worst comes to worst, you don't get a recommendation from him. frankly, it might be better off that way if he's so damn apathetic about helping you... do you really want a recommendation from that kind of person
( ... )
oh, and for the record, i support whatever decision you make regarding taking time off. BUT, i will make it my personal mission to kick you in the ass until you go back if you decide to take the time off. lol.
