Concrit, betas, and paragraph structure, oh my!

So I was originally going to ask if anyone was having trouble with comments not working properly.  A while back LJ told me I wasn’t allowed to edit a comment, but when I refreshed there was no reply.  I thought I was going nuts.  Nope.  I just figured out that it wasn’t me.  I felt bad too, but it wasn’t me after all, which is a relief.  Anyway, to ( Read more... )

I actually was surprised. It was someone I thought would be happier to take assistance (I later realized that I have talked to them before, just not about fic and junk). I was wrong. And now I'm sad. :(

Most people don't, no. But if you're writing and hoping people will read your stuff, you have to improve on things here and there. Of course no one is perfect, but if your readers have trouble with an aspect of your work, it's probably something you should work on. I'm just sayin ( ... )

I admit that I start reading stuff feeling like the grammar police at times! (and trying to type that on an iPad is way beyond frustrating) If the fic holds my initial interest I will go to the bother of copy and pasting it into a Word document, and separating out the dialogue into paragraphs; whilst correcting the grammar. I often wonder if the differences between "your" and "you're", or particularly "to" "too" and "two", are taught anymore. There were strict rules about such things when I was at school many moons ago; and I have to take into account the cultural differences with usage of "it's" I'm told ( ... )

Ahem. I went to public school. I spell just fine, and was tutoring the kids from snotty private schools who were several years older than me. I'm just saying. (Then again, I got put in the handicapped class as a little girl for "not doing my homework with the class" because I was ahead of them all, and subsequently got kicked out for correcting the teacher's spelling, so that really doesn't speak well of my school anyway....)

There's LOLspeak, and then there's actual English. If you're doing it to be silly and the words are grotesquely misspelled as a joke, I'd be okay with it. The problem is that no one can actually spell anymore, and it's not on purpose. :/

And if there's a cultural difference on its/it's, I'm going to nuke someone. :p

Tip that hopefully won't get me killed: I'd re-check anything that you write on your iPad (fic-wise) before posting. I'm thinking that's a lot of your LJ coding trouble, and it could probably improve some stuff for your structurally as well. I know I have trouble sometimes on my phone too, so it's not just you.

If I go to the trouble to do that, I'll PM the author first and ask if they want a little help here and there. If I'm going to all the work to make a fic easier to read, I'm going to let everyone else benefit from it too, rather than leaving them to the fate of trying to wade through the messy composition.

I don't know. I've run things past people and they said it was fine and dandy, and a week later I looked at it and saw a line that was totally OOC. Of course at that junction there's really nothing to be done about it. :(

Wow, LONG post! First, some technical stuff...I have discovered since i no longer have a paid account that i can't edit comments. It's really annoying. I also know that you can't edit a comment once its been responded to and that you can't reply to a comment that has been deleted (this probably goes for moderated, too ( ... )

I can certainly relate with people with subpar work getting more glowing reviews and that being a downer. ):

Little bit, yeah. Mind you, I don't read your fic because it always seems to be porn and I don't read the adult stuff, but you SEEM as if you can put a sentence together when writing a fic. Some people can't, and yet their stuff is so popular. The sad part for me is that they truly don't know they're doing something wrong, and they could be so much better if they just used spell check or a beta or something. A proper beta, that is. :p

*glomps you*
