Aparently its tradition to get your shirt "tail" cut off because back in the old days before radios- a student and instructor sat in the airplane with seats that were one in front and one right behind it. so the student would sit in the front- and since it was hard to hear- the instructor would tug on the student's shirt tail to get their attention to correct them or something. So when you fly your first solo its a symbol of 'I don't need my instructor any more' - in a sense. :-)
