Making a cd

May 02, 2005 15:21

I'm burning a mix CD for a close friend, to repay a favor, and I was hoping that you guys could give me some suggestions. He likes heavy stuff with a lot of groove, but he's been out of touch with the scene for a long time. Big fan of Pantera, old Sepultura, and the like. Not a big prog-rock fan, just pretty much meat-and-potatoes metalhead fare ( Read more... )

Opeth isn't really good for "heavy stuff with a lot of groove".

Don't get me wrong, I love Opeth. However, only certain songs of theirs qualify as "heavy stuff with a lot of groove".

...Unless the guy doesn't ming changes in genre throughout a song.

True, I didn't really pay attention to what he asked. If you want to hear groove, then Crowpath is my real answer.

I've never heard of them before, but I'll definitely check them out. Thanks.

Maybe some Tool, Velvet Revolver, Mudvayne, Otep, From Autumn To Ashes, or Black Dahlia Murder... Don't really know what you mean by groove though.

A groove in metal is hard to define... It doesn't have to be slow, but it isn't about speed or blast beats, either. It depends heavily on the drums, and is usually either a mid-pace headbanging rhythm, or one of those riffs/beats that makes you want to stomp your foot through the floorboards.

Think "Edgecrusher," by Fear Factory. I'm not exactly Fear Factory's biggest fan, but that song is all seven-string groove.

k I understand what you mean now. Velvet Revolver and Methods of Mayhem are still pretty decent choices then...

two suggestions:

Mudvayne, Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, and throw in some Damageplan!

Most of Lamb of God would be perfect. I know he likes some Shadows Fall, as well. And Damageplan is... well, it's Vinnie and Dime, so he was always a fan. Good picks.

Do you recommend old Mudvayne, or new?

especially Old Mudvayne

LD 50 is one of the greatest records ever made

Check Out:

Dig
Nothing To Gein (very trippy)
Under my Skin
-1

...The whole fucking record is classic, but those are the songs that stand out the most to me

Lamb of God- I recommend Ashes Of The Wake (it maybe "from" the wake) if he likes instrumentals

I have some more things to say about this...but I'm about to head out...more to come!
