I think that genre's are divided by not only lyrics but also by musical style, if not more so by musical style.

And.
I dont hate emo. I really dont mind emo and indie at all. And I'm not ashamed to say that. I dont even know why I should be ashamed to say that.

I'm sorry if i got you wrong, and i'm sorry if i get anyone else wrong too. It's just so much when the question of emo is proposed here, people say they hate it, and it seems like in almost every application they say that as well.

A lot of times I think certain music gets either what the band wants to be labelled as, or wrongfully labelled. the whole genre idea is completely scewed: I think most genres are drawing on and from other genres. But, if genres must be described, I think that it is a combination of lyrics and style. For example, if I were to describe country vs metal, I would likely say that the difference between the two is that in metal the lyrics tend to be more "raw" and the singers sing a lot louder and often quicker. However in the country genre, music seems to have a certain lyrical content, for the most part, and it tends to be about love/things in the country. The music aspect sounds as though it is mroe closely related to old rock and roll. Both genres you can dance to and you can also sing along to. I think teh way genres are divided are also more of a personal thing; for example, one person may describe good charlotte as hard rock, and someone else may describe it as pop rock. So the majority of the time, I think it's up to the person to ( ... )

There are lots of generes I dislike including emo. But that's because you'll have a hard time getting me to like anything without a virtuostic guitarist.

A guitar player who is a virtuoso.

I think you know what a guitarist is.

Virtuoso (n.):one who excels in the technique of an art; especially : a highly skilled musical performer

John Petrucci is a virtuoso. Steve Vai is a virtuoso. Joe Satriani...virtuoso.

Yngwie, MacAlpine, Lifeson, Buckethead, Bumblefoot...all virtuosos.

So basically, a virtuostic guitarist is one who exhibits an extraordinary amount of talent on a guitar.

And I mean, who can define art latalone artistic value? I mean, clearly someone who is good at what they do which in this case is create a form of art, and to be good (in my opinion) is to accomplish waht they set out to do/ do something amazing accidentally. Okay, so really artistic value has so many meanings, however, umm..now I can't remember where I was going..Oh right! Is artistic value a combination of their talent, lyrics, and music? I mean it ahs so many levels. Man, music is so great.

I think your question is legitimate. Emo is basically just bad punk. Believe it or not there is GOOD punk out there, but I don't anyone in this community knows anything about the greatness of Raw Power or anything past 90's shoe-gazing post-punk or very boring guitarists like the above mentioned.

I have some interesting punk on my slsk acct if you want it: rss313.

file both Good Charlotte and Simple Plan under "pussy-rock" and be done with it.
