Courtney Margaret Kagari
Pokemon Special, post-Emerald
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
5'1” tall, 102 lbs. She's very small and wiry with a dancer's build. Bust size is 28B/C, and hips are modestly curvy.
2. How old is she?
26. Birthdate is September 1, 1980.
3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch?
Very relaxed, purposely careless. Often doesn't bother facing the people she's addressing. Often slouches or leans against something nearby.
4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Very fit, tightly muscled without an extra ouce of fat. She's extremely active, agile, and acrobatic. She has no health conditions, but is covered in faint burn and knife scars.
5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Very efficiently, without any wasted motion, and with full unconscious control over her body - like a gymnast or a dancer.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror?
Courtney is attractive and vain about it. Her self-image is actually a little skewed; though she knows she's good-looking, she's become resigned to the various scars, scratches, bruises, and dirt that mar her appearance. So, while she's pleased that she's more beautiful than average, she's still unsatisfied with her appearance.
7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Olive and smooth, apart from where there are scars.
8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style.
Black with a purple sheen, and very thick. It's short and bobbed to keep it from being a fire hazard, and curls inward to frame her face, though it would be fairly straight if it were longer.
9. What color are her eyes?
Dark brown that can appear any color between red, mahogany, purple, and dark gray depending on the lighting.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Her collection of burn scars is truly impressive, and she has very long, thick eyelashes.
11. What are her chief tension centers?
Her legs and hips. When she's stressed, she becomes very stiff-legged; she will stand with a wider stance than usual, and when walking will no longer be graceful but abrupt and jerky.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit?
When she's not in uniform, she's either wearing old, comfortable skirts or dresses for gardening in, or is beautifully and fashionably dressed, often in contest gowns. For everyday wear, she prefers dresses and long skirts to pants or shorts. Her best colors are crimson, burgundy, and dark colors in general; she thinks white gowns are beautiful, but knows she can't pull them off with her complexion. She's very conscious of fashion and aesthetics in what she wears, and designs most of her clothes herself.
13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them?
Yes - she designs and tailors them herself.
14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences?
On the job, she's always in uniform, even sometimes in public when it might be better to be unobtrusive. And while she was in Team Magma, she was always on the job.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Briefs over panties. She wears skirts - wouldn't want to show off more than she intended.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
She's a mezzo soprano, but speaks in different parts of her range depending on her mood: when she's relaxed or annoyed, she speaks in the bottom of her range; when in a good mood, her voice is high and singsong; and, when angry, it becomes a furious shriek to the point where her voice sometimes gives out. Her voice is also slightly nasal due to her accent.
2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate?
Usually she speaks very languidly, without having to think much about what she says. When flustered or angry, however, she starts losing control over her speech, and may become speechless or start shouting too quickly to quite know what she's saying.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
She has a strong (Boston/Kansai) accent that she developed in her later teens, though it's barely noticeable when she's in a more legitimate environment. She's fairly careless with her words, and often makes grammatical errors or peppers her sentences with slang or valley-speak. She also has a rather dirty mouth and throws around curse words with abandon.
4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency?
She's fluent only in Japanese, though she can get by with difficulty in English and knows some French.
5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
In the criminal world, her accent is very pronounced, but it's barely noticeable otherwise.
6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words?
She tends to say whatever is on her mind without bothering to think about it. She seldom makes formal speeches, though she often addresses groups of people either as a high-ranking member of Team Magma or as part of her contest routines. When she is passionate about a subject, she can be surprisingly eloquent.
7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
In general, she is a very unintellectual speaker; again, however, this changes when she becomes passionate about something.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart?
Courtney is actually quite intelligent, but most of the time it doesn't show much because she isn't academic and quickly becomes bored with anything that doesn't catch her interest. She did very poorly in in school for the most part because she didn't care about the subjects or about doing well in her classes. However, in subjects she does care about, she learns very quickly and is quite insightful.
2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate?
She almost never makes plans, instead almost always just reacting to the situation in front of her. She doesn't have the attention span for much else. When she has a goal to pursue, she usually attacks it directly. She can continue pursuing a single goal doggedly for a long time if she cares enough about it.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Very intuitive - she makes decisions based on her gut feeling of the situation, and often makes sudden decisions that might seem very irrational. She's not at all idealistic; she's generally quite cynical and tends from experience to assume the worst of people.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Courtney attended academy rather than a Pokemon Trainers' School, and continued with middle school rather than leaving on a trainer journey at ten. Her grades and attendance were very poor and she left school at sixteen.
5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about?
Courtney knows a great deal about burns and first aid through necessity; she's also a very competent herbalist and has a talent for finding people. Like all of Magma's leaders, she also has a decent grounding in geology (pun very much intended) and Hoenn mythology, but doesn't care about it much beyond what's necessary for her position.
Before she joined Team Magma, she was a very successful Contest participant, and she considers herself an expert on beauty. She is unexpectedly skilled in other pageant-related areas, such as ballet and gymnastics.
6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert?
Antisocial. As a rule, she distrusts people and generally interacts with them only destructively. She sometimes gains an interest in certain individuals, but it's more of an obsession than any real relationship. She can sometimes get along with people enough to work with them, but again, there's little connection beyond that.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
She has a very unstable and volatile personality. She is apathetic by default, but this can change extremely quickly to anger or violence. She's fairly malicious and enjoys toying with people without caring how much she hurts them, or simply hurts them to amuse herself.
8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
She generally has a very low opinion of people, based on experience, and expects very little of them. When people occasionally surprise her, she will often become very interested in them, probing for more information. She is also very observant of the people she meets and can discover a surprising amount of information about them within only a few minutes of seeing them for the first time.
9. Is she more likely to act, or to react?
To react. If she makes the first move, it's usually the result of a sudden mood swing or decision based on what's happening at the moment.
10. Which is her default: fight or flight?
Courtney's default is actually to freeze, physically and mentally. Once she unfreezes, she's able to decide what action to take, usually fleeing only if she thinks she's outmatched.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Though she can usually appreciate regular humor, Courtney's mean. She gets the most amusement out of hurting people, and likes to torment them like a cat rather than use straight-out brutality.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them?
Courtney has actually been diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder, ADHD (Inattentive Type), and pyromania. She is also diagnosable for pyrophilia. She used to be medicated for ADHD but stopped taking medication when she left home at sixteen. She doesn't really...deal with her disorders at all. They're just who she is.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person?
+ Her contest career.
As much as she tried to put her entire prior life behind her when she joined Team Magma, Courtney's experience in contests was too huge a part of her life to ever forget. She still had the ribbons; she constantly used her knowledge of berries and other plants; and her main Pokemon, Ninetales, was the Pokemon she competed with. In fact, almost all of their early training together was for contests rather than battles, and some of Ninetales' signature moves were originally developed to use in appeals.
+ Middle school and afterward. (read: the terrible things that happen when events turn sexy without the player's intervention)
Upon starting eighth grade, when she was fourteen, she and her classmates moved from elementary to middle school. Because of issues with truancy, firestarting, and abysmal grades, Courtney was put under the responsibility of the school's counselor. This began two years of continual and systematic sexual and mental abuse - the man forced her to obey his demands, saying that she should be grateful that anyone was willing to help her at all. He rewarded her by pulling strings with her teachers and the law, keeping her in passing grades and out of prison, and threatened her with removing his protection if she disobeyed him or told anyone about what had been going on. He actually did get her sent to juvie twice; at one point while she was there, she was raped by one of the prison guards. After two years of this, when she was sixteen, she followed her counselor to his home after school, trapped him inside the house, and set it on fire. She ran away from home a few hours later, heading for Slateport, and spent the next year homeless. She may or may not have had several more bad sexual encounters during this time.
+ Joining Team Magma.
Courtney joined up at age seventeen as one of Team Magma's earlier members. It was basically the perfect deal: she got a group of dangerous people on her side as backup, and she was allowed to do anything she wanted with no consquences as long as she kept Maxie satisfied.
14. What does she fear? (read: panic triggers)
+ Being tied up or similarly restrained.
+ Physical contact from other people, especially any kind of sexual contact.
+ Suffocation, and specifically being trapped underwater or in rising water. She can generally keep it well under control except in very rare circumstances. Related: an average level of general claustrophobia.
15. What are her hopes or aspirations?
She hasn't really thought about it much.
16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her?
She doesn't talk much about any of her past, but she especially doesn't mention the period between beginning middle school and joining Magma.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents.
Bitter. They were fairly loving, but she can't overlook the fact that they never noticed or did anything to stop what was happening to her.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like? No.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand? No.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them? No.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
She used to be good friends with Daisy Oak.
6. Does she have other close friends?
She doesn't really...do friends. She'd wanted to be friends with Ruby, but never made it that far before Ruby left after the final battle between the three legendaries at Sootopolis.
7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people?
Again, she doesn't really do friends. In fact, since she's antisocial in the literal sense, she seldom really has positive interactions with anyone.
8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends? Allies.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once? Single, has never been in a relationship.
10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? See above.
11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest?
She had a very short-lived crush on Maxie for no other reason than that he was her first ally since she'd run away from home. Her only other crush was Ruby - not exactly in a romantic way, but simply in that he fascinated her.
12. What does she look for in a romantic partner?
Romance isn't really a consideration.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any?
No, and she does not want any.
14. Does she have any rivals or enemies?
Short answer: anyone who gets in her way.
