Part One
Name: Ashley
Age: 14
Location: Nowhere... I mean Bushnell, FL.
Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
Last Book you Read: The Thief Lord (Cornelia Funke)
Part Two:(Favorites) Explanations are nice.
Food: Spiniach Dip and Rasin Bread. Why? Because Amanda's boyfriend made it and I ate almost the whole thing. I think if I wasn't walking around with Amanda I would of fought for the last piece.
Books: The Lord of the Rings (all), The Hobbit, Xanth Series, Inkheart, Salem's Lot, and The Red Death. I'm a lover of fantasy, macabre/horror, and science-fiction.
Music:
The White Stripes- I enjoy their music a lot, who says a white boy can't play the blues.
Auf der Maur- Melissa is a huge role model to me. She's a bassist, a songwriter, and a frontwoman. I find that amazing.
Blues Traveler- this is my teacher's fault. He gave me a CD and I'm like "Wow, what such clever songwriting and music."
Garbage- Shirley Manson is amazing. I really can't describe my feelings for their music other than I really like it.
Switchblade Symphony- It's like dark orchestra and soloist to me. Gives me visuals of Beethoven in all black with black eyeliner on while he's conducting this vampiric orchestra and haunting vocals.
Enya- Enya is Enya, enough said.
Sarah McLachlan- This woman is friggin' talented. Her voice is soft but not timid, her piano/guitar playing is almost virtuistic, and Lord knows her songwriter flys you to the moon and back.
Franz Liszt- *blushes* I have an obsession with the former periods of music. Yes this gal actually likes her music history. But anyway, Franz Liszt is THE PIANO VIRTUOSO! Not to mention Romantic music is one of my favorite periods of music.
Songs:
"That Which Dosen't Kill You"- A great message in a song "The politics of lasting just a little bit longer/is the art of living everyday./ That which dosen't kill you only makes you stronger/until it finally kills you all the way." Or maybe it's just the line "Harmonica powering activiate", not.
"I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet)"- A White Stripes song, in fact this one replaced "Apple Blossom" in my mind. Sometimes I will cry when I listen to this song, but usually it just touches my heart.
TV Shows: Whose Line Is It Anyway?, yay for comedy and improv. It usually brightens my life before I go to bed. Spongebob Squarepants, "who lives in a pineapple under the sea?". Come on now, I'm entitled to a favorite cartoon and I love Spongbob. Enough said, right?
Movies: The Lord of the Rings (all), Van Helsing, Underworld, and Rocky Horror Picture Show. For the first two see the same reasons I like the books I like. For Underworld, I'm into this kick about Vampires, so for now I'm a vampire fanatic. And that last one, well, let's just say I don't know how that got on the list. No sir-ee.
Colors: Purple and Black. Royalty after Death/Your only famous after you die.
Sports: Band Competitions (Go Raider Band!), Volleyball, Dressage, Hunter, and Show Jumping (♥ horses).
Candy: Those chocolate malt balls, because I like chocolate malts.
Subject in school: Band and English
Thing to do on a rainy night: Stand in the rain itself or sit inside playing my bass guitar.
Store for clothes: I'm not really picky, although I've been known to go into Rave a lot.
Store for non-clothes: Music Central. They're a Fender dealer and they have some nice stuff in there, plus I usually only trust them with my bass.
Piece of make up (ie, eyeshadow, eyeliner...): Eyeliner, it's usually the only thing I wear. Of course right now I've only got my teal blue pencil.
Part Three: (Opinions) Please FULLY explain.
Gay Marriage: I'm not against them at all. Although I may be straight, but I keep an open mind. I think people have the right to choose, it's not hurting me. I know the Bible talks against it and I'm a Christian, but again it's not me-- it's their beliefs.
Drinking Age: I'm not for it and I'm not against it. I think there are some good reasons the drinking age is where it's at, but sometimes I don't think it should be an enforced law. I mean I don't think an 8 year old kid's liver could deal with straight Vodka shots, so it'd be unhealthy and it could start alcoholics at a young age. But then again I think the age requirements could start alcoholics at a young age, especially with the kids who love to deny anything they can so they go and get drunk all the time.
Premarital Sex: This is a touchy subject in my book. I mean I can understand it, and then I can go against it. I'm not going to do it hopefully (I'll owe someone money if I do *laughs*). People who don't choose one person and then sleep around (and even people who are married and sleep around) can spread around some nasty stuff. It can also cause single parents, plus a load of other unwanted things. So if you want to take the chance, hey, it's your decision.
George W. Bush, and administration: I don't care for Bush, not at all. I think he's made some pretty unwise decisions and done somethings he shouldn't have. I mean I was never in his brain to know why he did that, but I do think that some other decisions could be made. I also think he's been trying to make laws based on his religion, my opinion of course, and that I do think there should stay a seperation of church and state. I mean the good ole' U S of A is a very mixed country so trying to make laws based on one religion is pointless in some ways and may hurt the other people. If you'd like me to continue on about his brother as our governor I'd be happy to write about that as well.
Standardized Testing: Like most students, I hate the FCAT. Why is this coming from a girl who made straight 5s (the highest) in Math, Reading, and Science; plus a 5 (6 is the highest) on FCAT Writes? Well first of all not all kids are as fortunte to have a encouraged education like mine, a going to be pyscologist mom, and a retired Chemistry/Physic teacher father. Some of that stuff is hard and there are some pointless questions on there. It puts way too much stress on kids, I mean in March you see a lot of kids freaking out of their brains. It's a test that decides whether you graduate or not, it's stupid. Because if you have a bad day and you make a 2 on the FCAT, oh my you aren't graduating. If you never pass the FCAT you also don't get a normal high school graduation certificate.
Allocation of school funds for sports programs: I think that schools should fund a little more for the athletic and arts departments. I know we have booster clubs and everything but that dosen't guarentee us money unless we actually sell something or get sponsors. There are plenty of instruments repairs and materials that the band would love to have. ((I don't know much about our athletic program)).\
Cigarettes: I think they're horrible slow-killers. Look at all the stuff it does to your body, but then again look at all the other stuff you take in and what it does to your body. Sure plenty of other harmful things enter our body everyday, but I don't want to add more. This is yet again a topic of choice and not right for me to shove my voice down peoples' throats.
Illegal Drugs: There illegal for a reason folks. Being all high and happy may be nice, but there is a forest for the trees. I'm for keeping them illegal, but as I said above for alcohol there are those kids who just have to defy the law and do them for that reason.
The weight of backpacks due to textbooks: Including the fact that I've already ripped one bookbag this year? I think when used properly the backpacks won't cause damage, but come on we're kids/teenagers, do you think everyone of us is going to use our backpack properly? I know I don't, I just sling it over my shoulder. Even with our "accelerated block schedules" *coughgag* my Algebra I book and my Physical Science book get heavy. I should be used to it right, I'm a guitar player. Wrong! In indoor rehersals (besides 2nd period) I've actually been sitting down because the strap was hurting my shoulder. So I think lighter bookbags would be a plus (a locker for me would be pointless, both classes with books are after lunch and both are across campus from each other. So stopping at my locker would be out of the question sometimes. The only thing I can do is throw my music folder in the bass guitar and pick it up after school)
3-5 Topics of your choice:
Band Geeks- Why do some people look down at kids in the band and then headbang to some heavy metal band? It amuses me to think of the reasons why. Techinically it's all the same thing whether your gracefully playing a Baroque piece or rocking out to that new Nine Inch Nails song. I assure you that even your favorite band sometimes sits down to look at a piece of sheet music (or, God Forbid, TAB), yes, even if your band is usually an improv band. Studies have also proved that musical kids actually do sometimes have better grade, yes probably even that idiots who has to be foolish every rehersal.
Labels- Punk, Goth, Prep, and Nerd, who cares labels are just for jars. I mean sure we've used these words to describe ourselves, but when you make a stereotypical habit of it then it gets bad. I've even fallen from the grace of no labels before I still don't really think of to make a stereotypical habit of it. If you look at me you'd probably have to say Punkie Prep Geek and you'd still be stereotyping me. Sure I have qualities from all "locations" but my label is still Ashley.
Groupies- I believe that this can be a label as well, but I'm going to use it in a few different ways. Sure, I call some of my friends my groupies. Do I sleep with them? No. But they cheer me on and are always looking forward to my musicalness (sadly it's usually on bass and not oboe). But yes there are the Stalker/Sleep With groupies out there. These are the people that hit on you when they really just want to hit on your band/instrument/type of music. These are the people that will sleep with anyone as long as their "cool".
Part 4: (What if) Explanations are nice.
What if you were offered $1,000,000, but you had to serve a year in the army? That's a tough question. I'd have to actually be in the position to give you an answer.
What if you were offered your dream job but it meant moving to a place with living conditions such as having to boil water before drinking? I think I'd actually take it. I mean I'd be doing something I love and that's all I care about right? I mean while I'm boiling that water I can finish the harmonies in my rhapsody.
What if you were offered your dream job, but for the next 20-30 years you couldn't travel out of state/out of your province? If people would be allowed to visit I might consider answering "yes" to that. But if it was very controlled, I don't think I could handle it. I mean I'd be loving what I do, but just to be restricted to that, I couldn't do it.
What if you were offered the chance to play in a state/national championship game, but due to injury you know you'd hurt the team's chances of winning? Would you play? Erk, I need to think about that. I mean I wouldn't want to let Mr. L down, but I also wouldn't want to hurt my bandmates/team. Marching band, I would actually tell him that I couldn't do it and ask of ways to make it up. But if it was concert season that would be very difficult, especially since you usually need an oboist to go to the State level.
What if a friend told you to lose the LJ or lose them? Depends on what friend and their reasons. If it's a friend that was just my friend and usually didn't come and help me but just talked and hung out with me I'd give them two words (maybe not that harsh). But if it was someone who cared for me and was actually my friend I would consider the reasons and might actually delete my LJ.
Part five (This or That) Explanations are nice.
Coke or Pepsi? Makes no difference to me, I drink anything with sugar. I would like to mention that I'd rather drink SoBes.
Red or blue? Either or. I don't care for the lighter shades of either colour to be honest, but any other shade it'd be a toss-up.
Brush or comb? A brush please. Brushing is more quicker for me and I just perfer to use a brush over comb.
Abercrombie or PacSun? Abercrombie, they actually have some nice clothing there that I like! I know, it might be a big shock to certain friends, but I don't mind having a bright bright expensive look once in a while.
Swimming at the Beach or Skiing in Colorado? Skiing in Colorado. Swimming at the Beach is something I could do any weekwend I wanted to, I live close to the West Coast of Florida. I like being an adventuresome individual.
Europe or Hawaii? Europe! Hawaii is a little overrated to me I guess. Now on the other hand going to Scotland, Romania, and Germany would be really cool. In fact I'm sure a lot of Romania has been untouched by time.
Psychology or Sociology? Psychology. My mom majors in psychology and I'm her little lab rat (alright, somewhat, but I just had to say that). I've been reading through her books and have been agreeing with the things mentioned. Alas, I do think that Freud is a nutcase.
Warm fleece blanket or quilted comforter? Both, I really do have both on my bed. I know this is fall in Florida, but my dad keeps the house cold.
Sweatshirt or sweater? Sweatshirt, I live in Florida.
Play an instrument or sing? Oooh an easy one. Play an instrument, I don't know what I'd do without my oboe, piano, bass guitar, harmonica, and banjo.
Write a story or paint a picture? Write a story, trust me, I can write better than I can paint.
Live in 1516 England, at the height of Henry VIII's reign, or in 1939 Germany(flushing toilets but looming war): Undecided, but probably England.
Part Six: (Looks)
What are you wearing right now? Do NOT mention brands or where you purchased it. A white shirt that have Diva on it in old english. Then around the word is faded vintage design with roses and it fades between light brown and pink.
What do you consider your best feature? I'm going to have to say my hair.
What do you consider your worst feature? My evil ezcema.
Would you ever have plastic surgery? No, unless it cures ezcema. But I think I've controlled it with my medicine.
Tattoos or piercings? The lobes of my ear. And yes, I think I want a tattoo.
Do you work out? If so, how often? *cough*Marching Band*cough*
Post a picture of yourself in formal wear:
Part seven: You
1. Why did you decide to apply to this community? Because Fir asked me to and she's a good friend so of course I'll apply.
2. What are your pet peeves? People who don't like oboes, people who use me, people who like me to like my bass guitar, and teachers that don't teach you.
3. Would you rather curl up with a good book on a comfy chair next to a fireplace on a winter evening or go to the local NBA/NHL/NCAA game? Curl up with a good book.
4. What makes you stand out from everyone else? BE ORIGINAL. If you put something generic, like 'I care about people and I'm nice', you'll get frowned upon, if not an outright 'no' from the mods. I think that my musical talent is unique, I mean who has played one note on the oboe and went "I so want to play this instrument!"
5. What are some of your worst habits? Playing out of tune/unbalanced and worrying about the stupid stuff.
6. Do you do community service? If so, what's the last that you did? If not, why not? I joined the Enviromental Club and we all did "Adpot-A-Road". I really think I should start doing it again.
7. What are three things you want to accomplish before dying, not including getting married/having a family/seeing the world/getting really rich? Sell a composition, not waste my life, and do something to change the world.
8. What are three places you want to go to? Why? Scotland, your evil Fir, because they have a great culture and I have Scottish blood. Germany, it's an interesting country with some interesting history. Plus don't you just love German people and their accents? Romania, it's a country untouched by time in some areas, I think it'd be cool to almost "step back in time".
9. Close your eyes, turn left, and grab the nearest thing you can (If you're at a wall, turn the other way or backwards). What is it? The British pound Jade, my penpal from England, sent me.
Part 8: School Smarts
1. Math: 8x / 9(4x+1) = 10 What is x? I want to say 2 1/4
2. Science: Choose one of the following:
Chemistry: What is dihydrogen monoxide? What do you get when you mix sodium and chloride?
Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, you know our good friend H2O/Water?
When you mix sodium and chlorine (not chloride *wink).. you get Sodium Chloride (NaCl), known to us at table salt. Why was chlorine changed to chloride, because it's a Binary Compound. The positive ion (Sodium) gets it's own name (metal or H) and the negative ion (Chlorine) drops it's ending and recives -ide. There's also terinary compounds but that involves polyatmoic ions.
3. English: Write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) using similie, metaphor, hyperbole, and two other figures of speech. Then, pick any work of Shakespeare and summarize it as best you can (one sentence is fine and any play will do)
"Her skin was like silk," he crooned. His croon was a bee's stinger against your skin. The newspapers in the street danced to the blues singer's song. When you glimpsed at his trenchcoat you might of thought it to be as long as the black train that passed behind him. Oh how you learned to roll with the punches when you sang for money.
Much Ado About Nothing- What could happen when you bitterly hate the person you love and then each find out the truth? What happens when your bastard brother follows the meaning in both senes of the word?
4. History: What is the significance of the year 1066 in England? OR What is the general significance of the year 1607? Don't know.
5. Pick one subject that you're currently taking, and come up with a question and answer for it, like the other ones in this section.
5a) Explain each scale mode and what makes that scale different
Ionian- Actual Major Scale
Lydian- Major scale with sharp 4th
Mixolydian- Domainant scale/Major scale with flat 7th (think Blues)
Aeolian- Naural minor scale ((can be played normal, melodic, or harmonic))
Dorian- Minor scale with regular 6th
Phrygian- Minor scale with flat 2nd
Locrian- Half-Diminished/Minor scale with flat 2nd and flat 5th
