Title: You'd better not pout I'm telling you why
Rating: PG
Pairing: Dongwoon-centric; Kiwoon
Genre: Bandfic
Summary: Dongwoon takes notice of all the babying Yoseob gets as the fake maknae, and dammit he wants his maknae title back!

Dongwoon scowls from where he’s sitting on the couch. Dooseob are practically flirting a few feet away from him, and really do they mind, some people are trying not to throw up their breakfast over here. It’s not fair, he thinks as the leader fusses over Yoseob just because he has a stupid broken foot or whatever. It’s not like Yoseob broke both his arms and all his fingers and needed someone to feed him like Doojoon seemed to think he did.

Nobody was that worried that one time when Dongwoon had a high fever or that time he faked pneumonia (okay, so he wasn’t actually sick that time, but nobody else knew that). His frown deepens at that thought. Why didn’t anyone care about their precious maknae?

“Whatcha thinking about?” Kikwang appeared beside him, effectively shaving off only oh maybe two years of his life. Dongwoon barely bit down a girlish scream of surprise. “Oh, you know... stuff,” he gestured vaguely, trying to breathe properly through his heartattack. He certainly didn’t want anyone knowing how petty his thoughts were; he himself almost felt guilty for them except for the fact that he, well, didn’t.

Kikwang follows his line of sight and smirks. “Hmm,” he says, eyes twinkling in that way that makes Dongwoon wary. “Are you sure, because I’d say you look almost” - he leans in to whisper conspiratorially - “jealous.”

When he pulls back, Dongwoon is absolutely and completely mortified. He doesn’t know what is worse. The fact that Kikwang now knows what a small-minded, self-involved little brat he was, or that Kikwang, stupid oblivious Kikwang, had figured him out so easily. He almost doesn’t want to think about what that means about the rest of the group and if they knew as well. So Dongwoon opts to not think and instead lets his mouth hand open intelligently.

“Hyung, you- how did- I don’t,” Dongwoon gapes desperately. “The others, do they know? Please don’t tell them, hyung.”

Dongwoon thinks that it must have been a testament to how desperate and pathetic he looked that Kikwang’s face softens immediately.

“Hey,” Kikwang says softly, one hand squeezing his shoulder. “It’s okay, alright? I won’t tell anyone. Just be smart about it okay?” He gives Dongwoon one last meaningful look before he leaves. Probably to hang off of Hyunseung, Dongwoon doesn’t get a chance to ponder at the look or the strange choice of words because Doojoon with his perfect timing cuts through thoughts.

“Can you get us another ice pack, Dongwoon-ah?” two pairs of eyes look over at him expectantly. Expecting him to bend to their requests just because he was guilty of being younger. Psh, he was no conformist. And just as Dongwoon opens his mouth to point out that Hyunseung was standing in the kitchen so why couldn’t he do it, Yoseob gives him his patented half-begging, half-kicked puppy look.

Dongwoon goes to get him his stupid ice pack.

In the relative privacy of the kitchen, Dongwoon grumbles about his Hard Life as he rummages the freezer violently for ice. In what kind of messed up world was it fair that Yoseob-hyung enjoyed all the perks of being a maknae - which he wasn’t, Dongwoon’s inner voice is quick to point out - and none of the burdens? Hyunseung side eyes him warily and takes his water bottle elsewhere. Dongwoon pouts harder.

They’re all surprised, but none so much as Dongwoon, by Kikwang’s proposal - and even more so by the fact that their manager is seriously considering it. But surely, manager-hyung wouldn’t implement such a strange idea without further considering its merits (and more importantly, its vices)?

Kikwang had convinced their manager-hyung that it was time to change fanservice partners, seriously, all the other kids are doing it, really hyung. Kikwang had always had some kind of mesmerizing power over their manager, so he’d only been too happy to change the pairings they’d be amping up.

“Umm… how about Kikwang you go Dongwoon and Yoseobie with Junhyung-“

“How about Doojoon goes with Dongwoon this time, to really feed off that maknae vibe? Fangirls will love the whole leader-maknae dynamic.”

Kikwang smiled winningly. Manager-hyung was struck speechless.

“E-excellent idea, Kikwang! Okay so…”

Kikwang smiled conspiratorially at Dongwoon like the two of them shared a secret. Well, Dongwoon didn’t know about Kikwang, but he certainly didn’t know whatever it was that had his hyung making that weird squinty thing with his eye. But he guessed fanservice wouldn’t be that bad, if anything Dongwoon was glad it was with Doojoon. The other man was so friendly that Dongwoon wouldn’t feel weird with brotherly hugs and smiles. The fangirls would eat that shit right up.

And that was how Doowoon came to be.

It was great for a while. The on stage maknae image had somehow also transferred off stage and his members babied him more, just like he had wanted. Nowadays, he was always offered the last bimbap or the first bowl of rice. He got to sit in the comfy seat next to Yoseob-hyung whenever they had time to catch some tv time.

Doojoon especially took the maknae role to heart; he was constantly following Dongwoon around, making sure that he was all right. But perhaps most significantly, Doojoon constantly demanded aegyo. The bastard loved it but the cuteness of it all gave Dongwoon a migraine.

Now that he thought about it, the only one whose attention Dongwoon hadn’t received was Kikwang’s. Before, there wouldn’t be a day without him shaking off a hyperactive Kikwang from his sleeve. He actually loved these moments as it showed Dongwoon how much his hyung cared about him, but it wouldn’t do letting Kikwang know of it-he’d be even clingier than before, which Dongwoon wasn’t sure he could handle. These days however, the other man was always hanging off Hyunseung’s shoulder or with an arm around Yoseob’s waist.

Speaking of the devil, Kikwang had just gotten out of the shower and already he was buddying up to an unassuming Junhyung. Dongwoon narrowed his eyes at the two. What, did they really have to flirt in the hallway? Never mind that the two were barely touching and the look they shared could hardly be considered anything other than friendly, which the two were of course. Dongwoon knew there was no logical reason for his annoyance, but that didn’t make it go away.

“Whatcha doin’ maknae?” Dongwoon could have groaned as a familiar weight settled on the couch beside him. But his mother had taught him to be polite. Bite your tongue, don’t be rude.

Kikwang finally looked up from his flirting talk with Junhyung. He did that one-eyed squinty thing again before dragging Junhyung away.

“Dongwoonie,” Doojoon looked expectantly at him, “show me some aegyo!”

It took a few more days of putting up with the aegyo-hungry leader and Kikwang who was still flirting with all the members (except for Dongwoon of course) for Dongwoon to understand why Kikwang was behaving so weirdly (so the squity eye thing was a wink; you’d think an idol star would practice his winks in front of a mirror or something). It took a few more days for Dongwoon to understand why all the new attention and babying couldn’t improve his mood after Kikwang’s ignoring him.

Well shit.

Dongwoon cornered Kikwang while the rest of the guys went out for lunch. They stayed in their room for the remainder of the day.

They didn’t end up making it out of their room for dinner either.
