[Day 1]
“Did you know? You’ll meet your first love here!”
“Ehh, seriously? I hope he’s good looking~”
“But I already have a boyfriend! Well, I guess I don’t really love him.”
Nino quickly passed by the group of giggling girls, already in a bad mood. Meeting your first love here? Yeah right. And why would you even date someone if you don’t love them?
Once their giggles subsided, Nino let out a sigh, watching his breath rise in the cold air. First love, huh... He leaned against a wall, his heart beating slightly quicker. He was always a romantic at heart after all.
--
Nino vaguely remembered a story he heard from his mother as he was in line in the supermarket.
It had to do with a customer in a market, only buying some toothpaste. There was a woman behind him, who had loads of stuff in her basket. When the man heard that he was the 100th customer and could have all his things for free, the man turned around to the lady behind him and pretended she was the wife- so of course, she didn’t have to pay for any of the things she was gonna get. Later the woman thanked the man, saying she didn’t actually have the money to pay for it all.
Nino could hear someone behind him muttering about how he didn’t have the money, and why was he trying to get all that stuff anyway. Nino asked the same question in his head.
Nino had only a cheap pack of batteries in his hand, that he could afford.
“Congratulations sir! You are our 100th customer, meaning all your things are free!”
“Huh, seriously?” Nino smiled and left the store with the batteries, and all his money still in his pocket.
Nino didn’t know about meeting your first love in this town, but he sure was meeting his luck.
He barely glanced back when he heard the customer who was behind him being yelled at for having no money at all with him.
--
Nino rang the doorbell, then let himself in, finding the door unlocked anyway. The moment he stepped in, he almost fell back outside at the sudden body being thrown at him. “A-Aiba!”
“Nino, you finally visit me!” The tall man grinned, his brown hair falling easily in place.
“Aiba, you look good!” Nino exclaimed, feigning surprise.
“Haven’t I always?” Aiba pouted, poking Nino’s forehead. “And you look exactly the same, even though the last time I saw you was when you were 17. I can’t believe it’s been 9 years without seeing each other!”
“We were best friends back in school, huh?” Nino kicked his shoes off and went around the house for the first time, curiously looking around. “The idol pair.”
“It’s a pity I had to move...But I was so surprised when Sho-chan told me he knew you!”
“Yeah, and then you keep bothering me about coming here.” Nino rolled his eyes, remembering how Aiba was always so bubbly and loud- he apparently didn’t change much either, just looking a bit more handsome.
“So are you staying at my house for the week? Or still at the hotel?” Aiba asked.
“I don’t know...Maybe I’ll just move into this place. You know, get an apartment,” Nino said thoughtfully.
“Eh?! You like this place that much already?”
“Well, it’s because my mom’s been trying to kick me out of her house lately. Saying that I leech off of her money for too long now.” Nino shrugged, heading back to the door. “I’ll see how it is for the next week.”
“Come back soon!” Aiba called as Nino left into the biting cold, waving his hand in farewell.
When Nino arrived back into his hotel room, he didn’t bother to turn on the lights but went straight to his bed with his clothes still on.
It wasn’t like he was hoping to meet his first love or anything if he stayed longer, really.
--
[Day 2]
“You see that artist?” Aiba pointed at a lone artist, not far from a bakery shop. He didn’t have much clothes on, and Nino wondered if he wasn’t cold like that. Nino could only see a small hand from the distance he was at, painting on the canvas that was blocking the artist’s face from view.
“Well, there’s some news going on about him. Like, he was going to a bunch of stores and trying to buy a lot of things, even though he barely has any money. That bakery shop gives him a loaf of bread everyday though.”
“Oh, he was behind me the other day, I think,” Nino said absentmindedly.
“What? You mean when you got those batteries for free?” Aiba’s eyes widened when Nino nodded. “You should have acted like he was there with you or something! Rumour is that he’s homeless, you know.”
“So what, I should pity him?” Nino frowned. Aiba pouted slightly, remembering how Nino never was the pitying type. Nevertheless, Nino started walking towards the artist with Aiba nervously keeping up behind him.
Nino walked around the artist, who didn’t pay any attention to them. He looked at the painting, almost gasping. (Although, Aiba actually did gasp.) He wasn’t expecting something that good.
Nino glanced at the hat on the ground, where a few coins were tossed into it. Nino vaguely wondered why there weren’t more.
“That’s..really good!” Aiba exclaimed. He tossed in all of the coins he was carrying with him, and Nino gaped at him. Sure, the painting was good, but he wasn’t about to give away his money for this stranger. It wasn’t even like he was gonna buy the painting.
The artist put down his paintbrush, and Nino noticed how pretty his hands were. He turned to face the two, and smiled thankfully.
Oh, damn.
Nino quickly emptied out all of the contents in his wallet without a thought. The artist beamed, and Nino smiled awkwardly back.
Blushing, Nino smacked the back of Aiba’s head, who only laughed more.
“I’ve never seen you like that!” Aiba giggled, “He was cute, but you were totally all over him.”
“If he smiled like that more, he’d be able to get all the things he needs,” Nino muttered. Aiba shook his head, looking at his former best friend with a small smile.
Nino sighed softly, wishing he hadn’t walked away so quickly. He should have said something, maybe tried to converse. Oh well, the artist should be there the next day too, right?
--
[Day 3]
“I’ll hang out with you later, Aiba,” Nino whined over the phone. “There’s still four days left!” When Aiba finally agreed, Nino shut his phone and started to get ready for the cold outside. It was getting more chilly lately- he wouldn’t be surprised if there was a white Christmas when he got back home. Nino didn’t stop when he got his winter garments on though; he also took an extra scarf and hat.
When Nino found the bakery shop, he looked around for the artist. Nino made out the art supplies not too far away, so Nino quickly went over to it. He was disappointed that the artist wasn’t there, but he could wait. For a couple of minutes.
Nino sat in the seat, staring at the blank canvas. He wondered what the artist did with his paintings. He probably sold them, if he had no place to keep them.
Nino jumped, feeling a finger tap his shoulder lightly. He quickly got out of the chair and turned, seeing the artist smiling at him.
“Ah- I’m sorry, I wasn’t waiting for you- I mean, I was, um, hi..” Nino stuttered and finished lamely.
The artist chuckled. “I’m sorry if you wanted to see some of my painting, but I’m not painting today.” Nino swallowed and nodded. “You don’t have to stay out here,” the artist said after a moment of silence, “It’s cold, so..”
“No! I mean, I wasn’t here for.. Anyway, here,” Nino blushed, holding out the scarf and hat. “It’s- I was wondering if you were cold,” Nino murmured, his cheeks bright red but he was ready to defend himself and say it was because of the cold.
“Thank you,” the artist said softly, taking them and putting them on. “They’re really nice.”
Nino grinned. “Good.”
He looked down at his feet, shuffling a bit. Now what? The artist said he wasn’t painting today, and didn’t he tell Nino to go home?
“Do you want to go to a café?”
“Huh?” Nino looked up at the artist, his eyes widened with shock. Did he just hear what he thought he heard?
“I know one that’s nearby. My friend works there- he might give you the special since it’ll be your first time going. I think,” he added as an afterthought.
“Ah- yeah, I’m only staying here for a small vacation, so I haven’t gone to any cafés here.”
The artist smiled and lead the way. “I’m Ohno Satoshi, you?”
“Ninomiya Kazunari- you can call me Nino.” Nino couldn’t quite help the goofy smile forming on his face as he followed the artist, Ohno, to a café.
“Jun-chan,” Ohno called once they entered the small, but comfortable café.
“Satoshi? Ah, is that your friend?” Jun waved at them and smiled. “You can have my special today, sir,” he addressed to Nino.
“Oh, thank you,” Nino said airily, choosing a seat. He was a little surprised when Ohno sat next to him, rather than across, but Nino didn’t mind.
After a minute or two, Jun went over to them with their orders, or rather Ohno’s order and Nino’s special. “I see you’ve finally gotten some winter necessaries,” Jun said, smiling at Ohno.
“Ah, Nino-kun gave them to me!” Ohno grinned and started to dig into the small cake that was placed in front of him.
“Me,” Nino explained rather embarrassedly when Jun clearly didn’t understand who ‘Nino-kun’ was. Jun smiled thankfully at him and went back to his place at the counter.
When they were both finished with their food and drinks, Nino supposed they were to talk a bit, since Ohno didn’t make a move to get up. “Is painting all you do?” Nino asked after a while.
“Hm, I like making clay sculptures. And I sometimes go fishing.”
“W-Where? I mean, for your clay...” Nino blushed when Ohno looked at him thoughtfully.
“Jun’s place,” he said simply.
“So is it true, that you don’t have a home?” Nino blurted out before he could help himself. Well, it was already out, so he waited for an answer.
“Mm, that’s right.”
“Ah...”
It was an awkward silence, at least Nino thought. He doubted that Ohno was really troubled, but Nino didn’t feel like turning to see his face.
He almost jumped when Ohno’s arm brushed against his, and the man’s head drooped onto his shoulder. Flushed, Nino looked down at the man. “Ohno-san..?” There was no answer.
“Oh sorry,” Jun said, quickly going over to them. “He often falls asleep, at the most random times. It’s not because you’re boring or anything.”
Nino frowned at the thought of Ohno finding him boring.
“You can wake him up if you want, but...I guess he really does look like an angel when he’s sleeping, huh?” Jun said softly, gazing lovingly at Ohno’s face. Nino agreed, but for some reason he had an uncomfortable feel in his stomach when he looked at Jun. When he finally left, Nino exhaled slowly, looking back down at the sleeping artist.
“I don’t think I mind if you’re my first love,” Nino murmured softly. He wasn’t really one to take love lightly, but Ohno was really just too pretty for Nino to resist.
--
Nino snapped out of his daze as he heard the sheets rustling. Ohno’s confused face poked out from under. “Finally,” Nino said, amused.
“Where am I..?” Ohno blinked multiple times, making Nino giggle.
“At the hotel I’m staying in. You fell asleep, and it seemed impossible to wake you up, so it was easy bringing you here.”
“Oh, thank you,” Ohno said sheepishly.
“Hey, um..” Nino hesitated, “would you like to stay here? I mean, I’m only staying till Christmas Eve, but it’s getting cold lately.” He squirmed under Ohno’s thoughtful gaze.
“There’s only one bed,” Ohno said. Nino opened his mouth to say something, but Ohno continued, “I don’t mind sleeping with you.” He smiled.
“...Oh, okay then..” Nino bit his lower lip. He sure hoped Ohno didn’t mean sleep as in sex (even though truthfully Nino didn’t mind that either).
“I brought your art stuff in here too.” Nino gestured towards the supplies, and Ohno beamed.
Nino sighed when Ohno was taking a shower. He really wasn’t in good shape.
--
[Day 4]
Nino yelled when Aiba tackled him. “W-What- ” Nino sputtered, trying to get the guy off of him.
“Nino, I missed you!!”
“You haven’t seen me for one day!”
“Which is a plenty long time,” Aiba pouted. He skipped into Nino’s room before Nino could stop him. “EHHHHH?”
Nino groaned. He went back into his room also, frowning at Aiba’s shocked face. Shocked because Ohno was pretty much naked in Nino’s bed.
“Oh my god, is this how Nino is now!?” Aiba exclaimed, looking at Nino as if in complete betrayal.
“He’s just staying over for the time being, and his clothes are being washed right now.” Nino rolled his eyes.
“Ah, okay.” Aiba looked back at Ohno and grinned. “Nice to meet you, I’m Aiba Masaki!”
“Ohno Satoshi,” Ohno smiled back.
“Oh-chan,” Nino said, “I’m going out with Aiba-kun for a little, okay?”
“Mm, have fun,” Ohno replied and waved as the two left. Nino was just a little sad about leaving him, but he had things to ask Aiba.
Once they were just walking in nowhere in particular, Nino started, “Aiba, have you met your first love here?”
“I have!” Aiba grinned. “Oh, is that why you said you want to stay here?” Aiba giggled, winking.
“N-No!!”
“It’s Ohno, isn’t it?” Aiba’s grin widened as Nino flushed, giving it away entirely. “You know, there’s a rumour...If you confess on Christmas Eve, your wish will come true! Romantic, hm?”
“That’s stupid,” Nino muttered. Well, I guess I can still confess since I’m leaving in the middle of Christmas Eve. Wait, what am I confessing?
“You have three more days to get closer to him,” Aiba said. Nino looked at him questioningly.
When Nino quietly opened the door to his hotel room and slipped inside, the lights were on. Nino found Ohno sitting in a chair, his head resting on the table. “Oh-chan?” Nino called quietly. He shook the man lightly, but it seemed that Ohno was asleep.
Nino hoped Ohno hadn’t been waiting for him to come back.
He was about to put a blanket around Ohno, but the artist stirred. He sleepily looked up at Nino and smiled. Nino’s heart fluttered as he weakly smiled back.
“Tomorrow...” Ohno murmured; Nino had to lean down closer to hear him. “Can I bring you someplace?”
“Okay.” Nino smiled as Ohno fell back asleep; he then put the blanket over him.
--
[Day 5]
Nino had been looking forward to going out with Ohno, but he didn’t think they’d go fishing.
“Um...Oh-chan? Sorry, but I’m not really good with boats..”
Ohno chuckled. “Don’t worry, we’re not going on the boat. There’s this little spot where fish gather, and it’s relaxing there. Although I guess more so in the spring than in the winter...”
Nino watched as Ohno cast his line with ease. Nino sat down on the grass, which had lost its colour but still had a pleasant and comfortable feel.
Nino had to admit, but after only a few minutes, he decided that fishing was a little too boring for him. But Nino didn’t mind watching Ohno’s calm figure, always getting excited when he got a little nibble.
“...Why here?” Nino asked after a particularly long silence.
“Because Jun-chan used to be my only friend. The people in the bakery are nice, but they don’t really talk with their customers. But since Jun is so busy in his café, he doesn’t have time to come with me here.”
Nino smiled smugly, wondering if he was special enough to be able to be shown this ‘special’ place.
“It’s cold, Oh-chan,” Nino whined when the sun was setting.
“But we barely started!” Ohno pouted.
Nino raised an eyebrow. “Oh please, you caught enough fish to last you a week.”
“Not true,” Ohno said quietly, but he reeled his line in anyway and stood up. Ohno helped Nino up and smiled. “I can’t believe you’re leaving so quickly... Who will I go fishing with??”
“Dude, even if I stayed forever I’m not going fishing with you,” Nino laughed. “Aiba might go with you though. Maybe Sho too- he’s another friend that lives somewhere around here.”
Ohno grinned happily. “I’m glad I met Nino-kun,” he sang, skipping back to the hotel with Nino smiling like an idiot behind him.
--
[Day 6]
Nino yawned, sitting up. He looked down at the sleeping Ohno next to him. He really did look like an angel when sleeping.
“Tomorrow is Christmas Eve,” Nino sighed. Ohno stirred slightly, but he continued to sleep. Nino smiled softly and quietly got out of bed. He could probably get a small breakfast for the two.
Ohno wasn’t one to wake up easily. Unless the smell of delicious bread was in the air. “Un?” Ohno got out of the bed and padded softly over to the table, where he found his favorite kind of bread. He looked around, but it was only him and the bread. So of course, Ohno started to eat it.
Nino came back into the room, chuckling at the sight of Ohno already munching hungrily on the bread.
“Mmph!” Ohno swallowed heavily. “N-Nino, I’m sorry, did you want some too?” He sheepishly held out the tiny piece of bread left for Nino.
“It’s okay, I already ate,” Nino laughed. “So what’s the plan for today?”
“Oh, I was actually planning on painting today..”
“Huh? Ah, well that’s fine! I’ve been keeping you from doing that after all, eh?” Nino smiled and quickly helped getting out Ohno’s art supplies, handing them to him. “Have fun with that!”
“Eh? But, Nino, shouldn’t I-”
“What? You should paint! There are probably people who miss seeing you outside of that bakery shop,” Nino chuckled. Ohno, looking troubled but Nino ignored it, nodded slowly and started to head out.
“I’ll see you later then, Nino,” Ohno said.
“Mm..” Nino’s smile faded when the door closed behind Ohno. ....Why did I just drive him away?
“Sho-kun, how does falling in love feel?”
“Uh..” Sho raised his eyebrows. Aiba giggled.
“Does your heart hurt? Do you do stupid things?” Nino bit his lower lip, anxiously waiting for the answer.
“Yeah, I guess it can..”
“Oh, okay, so I’m falling in love, right?” Nino smiled and sat down, excited for the night to come so he could see Ohno again.
Sho almost laughed. It had been a while since they saw each other, and this is what Nino wanted to talk about the second he saw him? Although this definitely wasn’t the Nino he had met with at first. That Nino didn’t care about his attempts to talk about his love life with Aiba, and was only obsessed with gaming or showing him magic tricks.
“This is good, Nino! Because then you’ll move here too, right?” Aiba asked happily.
“Ah...Yeah, I guess I can,” Nino said thoughtfully. Being able to see Ohno for the rest of his life, huh... That sounded nice.
--
Ohno was already sleeping when Nino arrived back at the hotel. Well, that was fine. Nino wasn’t really sure what to say to the guy after finding out he was in love.
I guess you kiss them in situations like these, right?
His heart thumping loudly (Nino hoped it wouldn’t wake Ohno up), Nino leaned down and kissed Ohno’s forehead lightly. The lips could wait for later. Nino crawled into bed, snuggling up to Ohno and falling asleep.
--
[Day 7 / Christmas Eve]
Nino hugged the sleeping body- Ohno’s- as he felt the morning sun’s rays hit his back. Nino didn’t want to wake up, didn’t want to leave the warmth. “Oh-chan, I love you,” Nino murmured. Well of course, there was no answer. But he did confess on Christmas Eve, right?
Wait no, that wasn’t how it was supposed to work. Confessions had to be heard by the receiver, or else it wouldn’t feel memorable or special at all, Nino thought.
He’d have to wake Ohno up then. Nino hugged Ohno tightly, tight enough to wake anybody up.
“That hurts you know,” Ohno whined. Nino didn’t let go, though. “If you were trying to wake me up, I am now.......Are you even awake?” Ohno pushed away, looking at Nino’s playful smile and bright eyes. Ohno chuckled softly.
The day went on normally. Nino didn’t bother packing up his stuff, and Ohno didn’t say anything about it. They visited Aiba’s place, Jun’s café, and lastly the fishing spot. There was only half an hour left before Nino’s flight would leave, but he didn’t care.
“...Snow,” Ohno said. Nino looked up, although a snowflake fell onto his eye. He giggled. Ohno looked back at Nino, smiling and a hint of a blush on his cheeks. Nino’s heart considerably began to beat faster.
This was it, wasn’t it? Even the sun was setting quite beautifully.
“Oh-chan, I...” Ohno tilted his head slightly to the side questioningly. “I...I want to stay here with-”
“Ah!” Ohno quickly reeled in the line when it shook. “Ah..it got away.” Ohno pouted, looking back at Nino but being caught in a kiss. His eyes widened for a second, but closed when he realized just how soft Nino’s lips were. When they parted, Ohno opened his eyes again and smiled at the flushed Nino.
“Stupid fish,” Nino muttered. Ohno chuckled, wrapping his arms around Nino and hugging him tightly.
“You were going to say you wanted to stay here with me, right? Well, make sure to get an apartment for the both of us.”
Nino grinned and nodded quickly. Although he frowned when Ohno went back to fishing.
Well, it was the fisherman artist who stole Nino’s heart first, and he didn’t mind in the least.
