Why is the coal miner bruised and/or zombie-like and haunting the coal mine?

I'm the survivor. The story is we were using the long wall machine and mining when we hit a soft spot in the coal. The miner using the machine got this "Crazy look" in his eye. So I ran all the way back to the saftey room (where I meet the group I lead through the mine). I'm bruised because I decided that after spending 30 some hours in a mine full of zombies, I'm probably a little bruised up. Plus I just wanted to show off my awesome bruise skills. ;-)
