Be nice

I sat down at my computer tonight intending to write about general writing tips, but thought I'd breeze over to Twitter first, just in case I was missing out on ground-breaking news. Like, you know, Borders filing for bankruptcy. I could wax poetic on my feelings on that subject, but since I'm an author and a reader, I figure my stance is ( Read more... )

Ohhhhhhhhh THANK YOU FOR THIS! I read a review last night that I thought was downright cruel and surprise.. the reviewers are aspiring writers.

Muy respect for you now.

I just mentioned in a comment above how it bothers me when writers who are trying to break into the market trash books. Writing a book is never as easy as it looks!

Becca, I love you. Lmao (dont be scared.) I have never met you but gosh you are so nice and down to earth.
Your blog was one of the most inspiring forces to get started with my manuscript and I will forever thank you.
I happen to know the reviewer you are referring to and we clashed several times based on her review of Hush Hush and another particular book about Werewolves. I do not support bashing any author's work simply because it is uncalled for. They, (said reviewer and other group of friends) thought my review was biased because I was a fan of yours. Not so. Simply loved Hush hush and your writing.
I am glad your wrote this and I hope people take it as what it is because I can imagine some misinterpreting it for something else.
Thank you for being so nice and inspiring. Cant wait for Silence and hope to meet you someday.

I'm so glad I've been an inspiration! Good luck with your manuscript!

And, ACK! I tried to change a few details in my story so no one would have any clue who I was referring to. It will make me feel better if I think you DON'T know...

Exactly. No matter your personality, I think everyone can be respectful :)

So, so true. There's no reason for us to speak poorly about books we didn't enjoy. One wise friend told me recently that our books aren't for everyone. No matter what, no book will resonate with every reader. And that's fine. Knowing this should translate in the way we talk publicly about others' books.

It's so much more fun to be nice. The writing community is filled with fabulous people. Think how much one would miss (besides book blurbs) by not following this simple tip.

And you are a stellar example of being kind, Linda! I think you nailed it. It's not about blurbs and how can the writing community help me? It's about helping others. It's about being involved with great people. <3
