I'll tell you how he lost it. The turtle pointed at his shoes, and the guy thought the turtle was trying to tell him his shoes were untied. So the guy looks down, and while he's looking at his shoes, confused, the turtle made a break for it.

I bet you're right!

What's sad is that Petropolis is in the valley- (of the MO river) and there's a HUGE HUGE strip mall there, and the highway, and countless other areas that a turtle might try to get to water areas via crossing busy roads. If a deer can total a car, I bet a 70 lb. brick could kill someone easily if he's in the way- not to mention it would do some damage to his own cute, thick, slow body.

They sell baby tortoises at some petstores. That pisses me off because they're cute when they're little, but they grow quickly and soon become too much for people to handle. They can do BIG time damage to a house and yard and need extra special care.
