Of all the other ficlets (i.e., not my wonderful ficlet), this one is my favorite.

Nothing ever happens fast with Hotch.

God, this. So much this. He and Haley were together for, what? 20 years before Jack was born? He's so methodical and careful. And even though I bet he's an adrenaline junkie, he also seems like the type to not do well with change in his personal life.

And, ooh, this is possibly my favorite line in any Hotch/Reid fic, ever:

Many years later, Reid wonders why Haley didn’t leave Hotch sooner more often than he wonders why Haley left him at all.

The whole section, really. Because seriously.

But aside from the idea of Hotch being difficult, which I love, it's also the sort of thought that real people in real relationships have, even when they love each other. I guess that is what I like about this. They both seem like real, actual people and not TV characters living in ~*happy fairy land*~.

I totally, totally see Hotch as an adrenaline junkie - with physical stuff. Kicking in doors is better than paperwork kind of thing, and I can extend that to some degree to sexbut... that stops there. I think with his personal/private/emotional life you pretty much have one option: Wait Him Out.

That doesn't even touch on the sheer amount of history with Haley and how his view of relationships and love is going to be one of someone who was involved with the same person for a long, long time and therefore is well past 'typically teenaged' ideas about what love is. If anyone knows it's not *just* emotion, butterflies and lust, it's Hotch ( ... )

I used to read a lot of Hotch/Prentiss, and the one thing that really turned me off the pairing was the speed with which everyone had them getting together. Prentiss' pushing would never work long-term with someone like Hotch, and in fact the best Hotch-Prentiss fic out there (IMO) emphasizes precisely how badly that dynamic is destined to end. Even if he didn't have a crapload of issues following the run-ins with Foyet, he's still a single dad whose last canonical relationship lasted ~20 years. He's just not hop-into-bed material ( ... )

I love this. Just love it. The slow build, all their problems and issues, the fact that their relationship isn't perfect -- all of this feels so right. Thank you so much. I love what you did with this prompt.

Thank you! The prompt was perfect and I'm glad you like what I did with it. It just. Perfect doesn't happen in the real world, and CM is so, so... well exaggerated sometimes but still real. Especially Hotch and Reid.

Really liking the last bit. Living with someone, even if you love them, isn't all rosy and bunnies and fluff, it's being willing to stay standing through all the annoying, random things that bother each of you because you know it's worth it to have the good things you love about each other. If the good things can't outweigh the annoying, bad things, you do what Haley did and leave (though not necessarily the way she did). I'd advise against taking someone's child away from them without notice though, even if said child is also your child.

Yep. No happily-ever-after in real life. Just day-in, day-out, trying to live with someone. And they get annoying.

Thank you!
