I will gladly scour thrift stores and furniture stores with you. IKEA is amazingly inexpensive and they have nice stuff. Also there are several nice used furniture stores in Melbourne that I've been to recently. Just let me know when you have a free afternoon.

If you need very much paint, I've heard that Home Depot and Lowes let people return paints if they don't like the colors, and sell "Oops" colors for deeply discounted prices, like $5 a gallon instead of the usual $20. You might be able to get a really high quality paint for next to nothing, and if you need more than a gallon, you can just buy a few cans of colors that are similar and mix them together.

Make sure you clear the color with your landlord though... God, you should see some of the atrocities people have left my grandparents with when they vacate apartments. One girl painted her entire bathroom an obnoxious shade of pink that we had to paint over three times to get back to white, and one person painted giant creepy eyeballs in black paint, right over their bed. Though, the way you describe it, the landlord would probably love you forever if you repainted. Bits of newspaper? Yikes.

Also: yay IKEA!
