and yes, they did - normally made from lambskin or sheepgut or something - tied on with ribbons, iirc. perhaps you can assign a little extra credit homework - a research project on "protection" in the olden days, and how it didn't work so well
My grandmother said that when she was a young girl she overheard her mother tell her aunt that "if you put a sock on it, you won't get pregnant." Granted, this is way post-Declaration times, but still, I found it hilarious.
