Lately I've really been missing music. Not listening to it, but creating it. For the longest time I wanted to be a singer, sang all the time, even wrote some music. I still kind of want to be able to be a musician, but it's getting less and less realistic ( Read more... )

I feel you. I'm lucky my lung function is holding out as well as it is (in the 60s), but even now I can feel cracks and whistles in my lungs when I sing that didn't used to be there. I'm pretty good at controlling my breath, but even when I feel I have enough breath I can't let a note go that long because then my lungs kind of "stick" when I need to breathe back in, and I cough.

I just have to have a creative outlet or I go crazy, especially since my job is so practical (accounting, whee). What about taking up an instrument? Or maybe songwriting?

Singing is just my particular "thing", I guess. I suppose I've always sort of believed that if we have souls, mine is in my voice. It's so uniquely mine, no matter what I do with it. And I just don't have the discipline to learn another instrument (or the time or money).

Not being able to sing outright is like losing a huge piece of myself. I can still do it, thank god, but on my bad days I just can't keep it up for long. Considering that when I was little I'd narrate my whole day in song, it's a pretty big loss.

Yeah, I often provide the soundtrack to my own life, too. You and I are two peas in a pod that way, I guess. A singing voice is like a thumbprint - no two are alike so it's your unique signature. And there's something thrilling about being able to take your instrument with you wherever you go.
