I'm thinking that the buildings are, by and large, made of some non-flammable material -- stone? -- because even if the volcano is dormant, it's still really damn hot and things can catch fire easily. I also think they're like, really small buildings all on top of one another, people leaning out of windows and yelling all the time, children running around, street performers everywhere, people toss garbage into the lava, etc. I'm seeing many different levels of the volcano, to make more space for people to live in; but there's a well in the middle of each level that goes down to where the lava is, which gives off a rank smell periodically. I can draw that if I don't make sense.
