Background Personality: His whole life, Lyle has been living in his brother's shadow. As a result, he makes it a point to show that he is not his brother. When he first joins Celestial Being, Lyle even puts on something of a jerkass facade. He teases Tieria, the man who had strong feelings for Neil, making him realize that Lyle != Neil. Then there was a scene with Feldt, a bridge bunny who'd had a crush on Neil. Lyle immediately came on to her like a lecherous dirtbag, earning himself a slap and distance from Feldt.
Really, though, like I said, it was just a facade. Lyle is actually a fairly decent guy. And there's a reason why he feels he needs to differentiate himself from his brother. While Neil would always put everything he had toward something, Lyle rarely tried hard at anything. As a result, Neil accomplished more and then got more praise than Lyle. This led to resentment, which in turn led to estrangement. Since then, Lyle has always tried to assert himself as a unique person.
This same lack of commitment also saves Lyle from the fate that dooms his brother. After the KPSA terrorist attack that killed the rest of the Dylandy family, Neil was unable to let it go and swore to get revenge -- if he couldn't find its mastermind, Ali al-Saachez, he'd settle for ending terrorism. But when Ali did appear, it was too much for Neil to resist, and he got himself killed. Lyle, however, has since moved on from the deaths of his parents and sister. He'd love to see Ali get what he deserves, but he's not intent on carrying it out himself.
But we see that Lyle does come face-to-face with revenge over the course of the series, after he loses his girlfriend, Anew Returner, and Ali starts appearing again. In both circumstances, Lyle comes face-to-face with revenge -- he has a clear shot at Setsuna's back, and he has Ali incapable of resisting with, again, a gun pointed at his back. During these scenes, it's apparent that the temptation for revenge is very powerful in Lyle's mind. But both times, he resists it. He understood that Setsuna did what he felt he had to do to keep Lyle alive and his Gundam from falling into the hands of the enemy. And with Ali, Lyle gave him a second chance, even though it only lasted half a second. In that half second, Lyle realized that Ali was irredeemable and was about to try to kill him, and so Lyle killed Ali not out of revenge but out of a combination of his duty as a Gundam Meister and as an act of self-defense.
Despite his general lack of commitment, though, Lyle is just as good as, or even better than, his brother when he does commit to something. As the season progresses, Lyle becomes more committed to his role as a Gundam Meister, and his skills in battle improve. Of particular note are the assault on the first Memento Mori, where Lyle fires the shot that destroys the laser, and his final exchange with Revive Revival in the final episode, where he uses his last remaining second of Trans-AM to get the drop on and kill Revive. When it comes down to it, Lyle is a capable man when lives are at stake, and he is able to think on his feet.
Otherwise, off the battlefield, as I said before, he's a good guy. Most of the time he's relatively laid-back and likes to talk to people casually. Like his brother, he's not shy about giving out his true name, either. At the very least, Anew, Sumeragi, and the other Gundam Meisters all know his true name, if not the entire crew of the Ptolemaios II. And he believes in freedom and peace. He joined Katharon because the A-LAWS were committing atrocities in the name of justice, and then joined Celestial Being to help Katharon fulfill their goal of getting the A-LAWS disbanded. So long as everything is peaceful and people are free to do what they want, he's satisfied.
