I have no idea (obviously) about how it would work for childbirth, but the breath of fire used in kundalini yoga, especially if all-mouth breathing feels wrong to you, might be a really good fit. It's through the nose. My body did things while doing the breath of fire that I never thought possible. Frickin' amazing.

Remind me what breath of fire is again? Belly pumping big breath in, little pulsing hard breaths out the nose?

That sounds right, although you might want to look it up for more specific descriptions. I know HOW to do it, but I don't know how to write it. :)

See if you can get a copy of Mother's Breath by Uma Dinsmore Tuli. She was my pregnancy yoga trainer and I've used her techniques to get many women through labour using yoga! And my advice would be to steer clear of Lamaze, it has a tendency to lead to hyperventilation. Full yogic breathing or in through the nose out through the mouth slowly and mindfully seems to work much better x
