» Gender: Female
» Age: Exact age unknown, but Kurai is actually hundreds of years old. She was alive during Alexiel’s rebellion and has been looking for her since her subsequent reincarnations. Initially in the series, if you were to judge simply on appearance, she looked around 13-ish. Since then, she has started to mature, although she still does not have the adult appearance that the Mad Hatter gave her once by the series end.
Mentally, she can both be very childish but also very mature. Like any regular person, she has her moments of doubt and concern but she also has her moments of wisdom. She’s grown throughout the entire series and learns a lot about herself, love and being a Princess. While she still has her moments, she also wants to be a Princess who will be good for her people.
» Orientation: Most likely, Kurai can be considered Pansexual. Gender hasn’t had a bearing on those she fell in love with, nor species as neither of them were like her, a demon. Although, her love interest really does just revolve around two people, Alexiel and her incarnation, Setsuna.
She is a demon and initially ‘loved’ Alexiel-sama, even though she was an angel and angels were attacking her homeland and had killed her family. She had hatred towards males as male angels had tried to have their way with her before Alexiel stepped in and saved her. She often told Alexiel that she could become stronger and take her as her bride to protect her.
Her initial meeting with Setsuna, a human, left much to be wanted. At that time, she just wanted Alexiel-sama to come back to her. Plus, Setsuna was a human. In her eyes, all humans were stupid. They were hopeless inflexible creatures that polluted the atmosphere, charred the air and eroded the earth. Yet, as Kurai gets to know Setsuna, she grew to truly love him- as it is pointed out that her love for Alexiel-sama isn’t really love. To her it doesn’t matter who or what Setsuna is or even that he loves another and will never love her. She grew to love him for himself and not because he was the reincarnation of Alexiel.
So in that regard, Kurai is pansexual.
» Personality:
Although Kurai might be lacking in stature, by no means is she lacking in personality. In many ways, she is more like a boy than a girl. In fact, not only does she refer to herself as a 'Prince', when people first meet her they tend to think that she is a boy. She fit in easily enough at the boy’s school, even trying to call out some guy who ended up being much bigger than she was. This is not only because of her clothing, but because she also refers to herself with masculine pronouns (in the Japanese). Kurai will also speak rather rudely, especially to people she doesn't like, whether or not she has cause too. Not really the trait that a princess should have, but Kurai isn't really a typical princess.
She is competitive, brash, outgoing and when she puts her mind to something, she will continue on that path for no matter how long. Sometimes the path she chooses is the correct one, but sometimes it just gets her into trouble. She is quite proud of her demon heritage and wishes to rebuild her kingdom. She can be violent when she needs to be, stomping harshly on people's toes or kicking them. She is easily prone to bouts of anger and will just as quickly threaten someone with loud words. She is someone who can easily be bored and doesn’t find any happiness in just sitting around and doing nothing, even if things are presented to her.
Kurai can also be very stubborn. In the beginning, she couldn't accept Setsuna as himself and instead simply wanted Alexiel back. To Kurai, Alexiel was the perfect woman. Whereas other angels had tried to have their way with Kurai, Alexiel had stepped in and saved her. Because of this, even though she was an angel, Kurai strongly admired the other woman and put her up on a pedestal. She guarded her body all those years while she searched. For Kurai, pleasing Alexiel was always the number one thing and she wanted to become stronger. That way she could marry Alexiel so she wouldn't need a man to protect her.
While Kurai can be quite childish, she is also considered to be quite pure. The Mad Hatter often makes note of this and one of the reasons that the Dragons ended up choosing her as their master was because of this pure heart. Even though she is quite old, she is still fairly naive about how the world works. She is headstrong but she is also fragile and too trusting. At times Kurai does put her faith in the wrong people and in turn gets burned because of it. She is quick to trust people, hence why both Mad Hatter and Arachne are able to use her. She isn't one to often question truths. She accepts Hatter's proposition at face value, assuming that Hatter would keep the bargain.
Seeing a large quantity of blood or people being hurt brings back memories of the past to her. She sees the slaughter in Gehenna in such cases and is reminded of all that has happened. Kurai wants to be a strong leader for her people so that she will never have to live through that again and so that her people will never have to live through that again. She vows to become a better queen just for that reason. She is very loyal to her subjects and also to those who earn her trust. She is quite good at understanding the loneliness and the pain of losing someone and tries to comfort people.
Even though she can be quite loud, there is also a kind side to Kurai as well. Such is the case of Prince Abaddon. It is said that any who look upon him would die instantly. Kurai happens not too. Seeing the loneliness that he suffers by being chained down and unable to fly in the sky, Kurai brings the birds down for him so that he could have some friends. She is the type of person who grows on people. Yet, she is also a crybaby and tends to fret and worry about people. Even when she is crying, she can still scream and be noisy with the best of them. While she initially denied her heart, she learned that she shouldn't, that no matter what she should listen to it and not lie to herself.
Kurai is often called pure, but to her, she isn't. She realizes as time progresses that a lot of the things she does is selfish, and she doesn't wish to be selfish anymore. She believes that she's not pure or innocent. She can be jealous and even has her darker moments. When Sara is attacked near the beginning of the series, for a moment Kurai wonders what if? What if Sara were to die there? If she were gone, wouldn't Setsuna then love her? Yet, she doesn't act on that, which is something. She even reprimands herself, asking herself what was she thinking?
She does envy Sara though. She was jealous of her and wanted to capture Setsuna's heart. She is just an ordinary girl despite everything else, and is just as fragile as one and just as sly. When she realizes this though, she doesn't wallow in it. Instead, she wants to truly become stronger so that she can protect the happiness of those that she loves. She pledges to herself that she won't lose her way anymore and that she won't allow anyone else to spill his or her blood for her again.
In the beginning, she only looked at things her way. She didn't stop to question why people did what they did. She was also hypocritical. She asked Hatter that even though Hatter knew that Lucifer 'didn't love you, so why did you fall for him?' Yet, Kurai isn't one to talk, as when she tells Setsuna that she loves him, she takes it back and makes a joke out of it. She might not always be understood, but she means well. She can be dense as well as self-sacrificing, wanting to be strong enough to protect people. She thinks that marrying is no big deal so long as she can help Setsuna. She wants Setsuna to always be laughing like he was. She doesn’t want to be left behind or not have those she cares about not come back.
Overall, she is a handful, but she learns, adapts and grows as she goes along. She realizes that she needs to be more aware of people and events. In the end, she takes the steps towards becoming a better queen for her people and her country.
» Appearance:
Appearance wise, Kurai has a darker tanned skin tone and is lithe in her build. Her hair is split into two sections. There is a longer almost chin-length bang section that is parted off to one side and frames her face and a longer section that tends to be in a pony tail. This goes down past her butt in length with a slight wave to it. Her hair colour holds a blue tint to it. She tends to wear it in the same manner all the time, although she has been shown with it all up and curled softly, but this isn't her normal style.
As well, her eyes are an icy blue colour. Unlike a human's- as she is a demon- they are slitted. She also has sharper teeth than a human's with her fangs being pointed and she has wings. Unlike an angel's wings, they are not feathered. The sections of the wings are divided into various panels, almost like a stained glass window. They vary in colour from dark green, blue and purple.
In the beginning, Kurai could easily be mistaken for a boy. She isn't very tall and she doesn't have much of a figure. Any figure she did have was also hidden by her baggy boyish clothing when she was in Asshiah. In Gehenna, she does adopt a more form fitting attire, but even that in the beginning was a bit more gender neutral. As time progressed and she matured, her clothing- although still spunky- did take on a more feminine feel, moving from shorts and a tank top to a longer blouse with garter belts.
In Amat, she will have a slightly more of a feminine figure, but nothing that noticeable. Still the cute girl type.
» Suitability:
Kurai is actually a lot older than what she appears to be. She is often mistaken in the beginning for a kid because of her stature and the way she presents herself. Initially, even though she is quite old, the similarity was drawn between a demon of her age and a young teen. This comparison was done before chapter 80 as at that point she had started to change. The mangaka states that even though she has grown and matured, that she still didn’t want to draw her too mature as her role was that of the cute little girl so the changes were not that striking.
In Kurai’s world, there has been much fighting, conflict and strife. When she was younger, she was sent away in what seemed to be exile. During that time her family was killed and the only relative she had left was her cousin, who was later revealed to be her elder brother. She saw her people dying and slaughtered out on the fields, saw their blood run, and even when she tried to help one, a group of angels happened to come by and killed the other demon as she was trying to help it. At this point, the angels then started to try to have their way with her, although the arrival of Alexiel halted that.
Even though the fighting did eventually come to a pause, there never was a true peace. Her kind, demons, were generally looked down upon and this was something that Kurai grew up with. Hardships were no stranger to her life and even along the way she encountered more of them. The one person that she had learned to trust and who had been by her side, Arachne, turned out to be a traitor. She is a survivor even though she does have her moments of weakness.
Kurai has proven throughout the progression of the manga that she has not only learned to adapt but that she has also matured. There are times when Kurai might take the wrong path and get lost, but her intentions are good. In the end, she comes to understand the situation she is in and has learned more about the world around her.
With her initial appearance in the manga, she hated humans and what they had done to her world. Yet, as it progressed, she learned that they aren’t all that different. Through Setsuna, she is able to learn more about herself and who she is. By the end of the series, she is on the right path to become a good ruler for her people.
The way she has matured can also be seen in her initiative to assist the angels. Instead of just leaving the angels to themselves, as the old Kurai would have been glad to see them die, Kurai offers to help. She was willing to call on water and wind for them. She even saw Rosiel, an angel most hated by her people, give his wings to help Setsuna, and that set her to thinking.
Also, instead of just tossing everything aside to go with Setsuna, she knows that she has a responsibility to her role and to her people. She wants to be a good leader, one that is worthy of praise. She knows that there is more to being a princess than simply a title. So even though she will get mad and stomp on toes, or cry when she’s hurt, she has grown and is mature enough to handle things without falling apart.
