I'm sorry, I just don't get dog people, I really don't. Unless you have at least an acre of land per dog, in which case it might be okay, why would anyone voluntarily choose to fill their lives with dog shit? These folks have a huge back yard that should be great for their kids, but it's effectively unusable because it's full of dog shit. The ( Read more... )

What I don't get is why anyone would want to own a dog in this city/ region.

Winter gets down to MINUS 30F. Do not want to take anything for walkies in that kind of cold, and I cannot see the dog enjoying that either.

Seriously. :-) The dogs I was sitting for, the two outdoor ones at least, have very thick coats and seemed happy even in the blizzard. But I couldn't get very upset at the puppies for going on the kitchen floor, because it made perfect sense that they wouldn't want to go out in that. Only thing we were compatible about. :-)

Thanks for the detailed response! It seems, then, that I've mostly had experience with the poorer kind of dog owners. That's good actually -- makes the world seem much more sensible. :-D

And for what it's worth, I'd actually love to keep doves. We had a bunch of them when I lived out in Chantilly; they weren't officially ours, but they spent a lot of time on our back deck and I adored them. The key was that their markings, body shapes, and personalities were all distinctive enough that I could distinguish them as individuals with their own traits -- I've never been able to do that with cage birds. And I was lucky enough to live near a peacock reserve for a while -- that was fun, having peacocks roaming loose in your front lawn. And I totally talk to the crows roundabout as much as I do to the cats. So it's not that I don't like birds. I just can't see them as pets, and wouldn't want to keep them caged.
