The job I have been coveting for several years--running the local version of the slightly less local community college is just about to come open. For years I have wished the director would be offered his dream job and move on to bigger and better things. A month ago I found out he had cancer. Today I found out he died last week. Your wanting the job had no impact on the course of events, so why should you feel bad? You were wishing good things for him -- bigger and better things! There's absolutely nothing wrong with you presenting yourself as a viable candidate for an open job, regardless of the sad circumstances. Don't take your sadness for another human being's tragedy and turn it back on yourself as guilt, you know?

Yes, you're right and I went through this when I found out he had cancer: the hope then was for a miraculous recovery combined with the flash of inspiration to follow his dream--to a different kind of job :-) Intellectually I get it and it isn't guilt I'm feeling... I'm not sure what I feel about it. Complicated.

NY apartment - contact the interim guy sooner, not later. They might have had a replacement plan and you want to let them know about you.
