I know I sound like a broken record but your going to have such a GREAT time in CR. As you know i spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica for our honeymoon
( ... )
My goodness, some of the hotels I saw were scary. Why is it that most of the photos of rooms seemed to feature a bed that had a quilt looking like it was made in the 80’s? One of the hotels you stayed out looked divine but it’s in a part of the country we are not going to so it wasn’t an option. Bummer! We were going to stay at the Areneal hotel but they were sold out. I know you stayed there. Did you like it a lot? Initially I was really excited about it but then I started to read some bad reviews.
Have you ever rafted prior to Costa Rica? I think I really want to do this but only if it’s an “easy” route? Did you do easy or advanced? From what you remember, is it hard? I only ask because you know Fred can’t see and I wonder if it will be too difficult for him. He refuses to do the Zip line, which is disappointing.
Thanks for reassuring me I’ll have a good time. I’m really on the fence about this trip. Sometimes I think it sounds great and sometimes I’m freaked out it will be too casual.
I've been a couple of times - mostly we've rented cars, one time we got around by public transportation. Renting a car is great for the obvious reason that you have more flexibility, but a driver would give you that too. Also, depending on where you go, the driving can be scary and kind of ridiculous, so it's probably less stressful to have a driver too.
Costa Rica is full of national reserve areas, so look up what might be near you and see about what activities (probably hiking) you can do there. You're going to two places I've never been, so I don't know any details of what to do. But, you should definitely eat gallo pinto at breakfast (and ask for salsa lizano), and have whole fried fish - my favorite. :-)
I would get some colones - American dollars are fine for paying hotels, but there are probably some small restaurants/stores where it would be easier to have colones.
Hi...I just wandered in here. I was laurainapril on WC. So I thought I would take a shot at the Costa Rica questions. We went last December for a week and LOVED it--I want to go back. We basically avoided San Jose and immediately went to Manuel Antonio and then to the Arenal volcano area.
It is a very laid back place--no need for anything fancy. As for transportation, we arranged for a private shuttle from San Jose to Manuel Antonio (five hr drive?). It was very easy (could have taken a bus--but like you said, Costa Rica just isn't that expensive). We also took the "Inter-bus"--a group shuttle from Manuel Antonio to Arena. I am under the impression Interbus goes all over the country. It's not so efficient--think Supershuttle in the US--but it is really cheap and full of tourists (again, pretty easy). I think it was about $25 for about a three hour trip.

When you were in CR did you Zip line or raft? How was it and if you rafted did you do an easy course?
