i find them quite frequently here in saint paul. however, i know all too well the numerous diseases and infestations that threaten their populations daily. without regular monitoring and treatment for the likes of mites and foulbrood, colonies simply can't survive. it is widely thought that there are no longer any feral honeybees in north america because they can't fight off the multitudes of ailments they're inclined to contract on their own. the idea that their continued existence is utterly dependent on humans pains me. now that we've more or less identified a virus to be the cause of colony collapse, it's going to be tough, even for us omnipotent humans, to find a way to help the bees.
i aim to help as i'm getting into honeybee research upon my acceptance to the University of Minnesota. so don't give up yet. nice to meet you!
holy hell i had no idea i would come across someone who desired to do this kind of research!
it's so depressing about the bees... because it means less blooming plants and also LESS butterflies. i haven't seen ONE bee(except for a couple sweatbees) at all and i've only seen a handful of butterflies. i have seen a few hornets and a couple bumblebees but that is it! granted, suburbia doesn't have much flora and vegetation, but I noticed this before i found out about it last year in the news.
i looked up hexapoda in your userinfo... learned something new and totally related to this post.
