This journal is an RP journal in polychromatic.

[character]: BT, called Machiko in real life
[character age / DOB]: 29; April 1

[character history / background]: here isn't a lot we know about Machiko in canon.

While we have no idea exactly how she got there, the Machiko we meet in .hack//SIGN is beautiful, has little interest in her high school reunion, and is highly manipulative. She uses her pixellated beauty to whatever advantage she can, presumably uses her real-life beauty in the same fashion, and double-crosses both friend and foe. We can only assume that playing games with people is an old habit, one she indulges with little guilt.

I, personally, assume that Machiko was raised by parents who probably should have divorced. She plays games with people with the ease of long practice, so I think she started out by playing her parents against each other, and then moved on to other people. It might even have become her major hobby.

We also know that she became a model, and then left that job. I doubt either of her parents approved of it, and the stress of constantly worrying about her physical appearance probably didn't appeal to her. By the time she reached her late twenties, she was working immense amounts of overtime in a dispatch office and playing the online game, THE WORLD, as a form of social interaction.

It was there that she met Sakuma Ryo, Shouji An, and the other characters of the .hack//SIGN anime. For the most part, she stayed uninvolved in Ryo's struggle to free An from the game. Her primary involvement in the Twilight Eye Incident was as a foil to Ryo, manipulating first Sora, then Crim, then Silver Knight in a search for the Key of the Twilight. She never did explain to anyone WHY, exactly, she wanted it.

Her relationship with Ryo seemed to become more and more complicated as time went on. They flirted, they met in real life at least once, he told her about his job. She betrayed him--or maybe she didn't; he forgave her very easily when she used Mimiru and had Tsukasa captured--and then betrayed him again--or, again, maybe she didn't; for whatever reason, he kept going back to her, even when he KNEW she was working with Sora--and finally chose to stand beside him in the final few episodes. In the apocryphal episode "Reunion," set after the end of the .hack//games, the series implied that they were a couple.

"Reunion" is the only glimpse of Machiko post-Incident that we ever see. She seems to have changed little from the person she became because of the Incident: a little more direct, a little more willing to dispense advice, and a little more sure of herself where relationships were concerned. Her relationship with Mimiru appeared to have improved, and she seemed actually fond of Subaru, whom she had once emotionally tormented after being rejected by Crim.

Bear's influence? The studio wanting everyone to have a happy ending, even at the expense of GU canon? Nobody really knows.

[character abilities]: In THE WORLD, the character BT is a Wavemaster, meaning she has a lot of magical skill, but low physical stats. In the real world, Machiko's primary skills seem to lie in the area of lying and manipulation. I do not plan to allow her to use any of the spells/skills of a Wavemaster.

[character personality]:

First and foremost, she is extremely manipulative To her, other people are either sources of amusement or means to an end. You are a string to be pulled, not a friend. If you ever think otherwise, you're in for a nasty awakening. It might not be immediate; it might be YEARS before whatever favours she's done you are called in, your mental weaknesses preyed upon, but your day WILL come.

Secondly, she's ruthless. At any given moment, she knows exactly what she wants, when she wants it, exactly how she wants it, and she stops at nothing short of crime to get it. And even then, she'd probably commit a crime if she wanted something badly enough, though she prefers not to dirty her own hands. There is no friendship, no vow, no blood tie sacred or strong enough that she will not use it, will not betray it, will not double-cross it.

Thirdly, she's usually very independent. She will not admit problems or worries to anyone she does not trust implicitly, because that is either showing an unacceptable weakness or asking for help. She refuses to do either. Part of this comes from her manipulation; she's so used to being the one pulling the strings that she hates other people claiming any authority in her life. She mitigates the distastefulness of having a boss by finding ways to work around--or, even better, through--him. The rest is just her nature. She likes to do things on her own, even if she's making her accomplishments through other people.

Fourth, there's a scared little girl who thinks nobody loves her somewhere in that messed-up bundle of Machiavellian crazy. (She might even be right, as she can be a hard person to like, if you really know her.) Her parents managed to fuck her up with all sorts of petty shit, and that left her emotionally fragile. Crim didn't help matters, and now that she's here and Ryo is gone, she's every bit as fucked up as she was before. She's easily hurt because she's already hurt, and when people hurt her, she does what she can to get back at them.

Machiko's sense of humour tends toward the dry. She much prefers banter to being made to listen to jokes and finds puns irritating. Anyone unable to hold his own in a battle of wits is, quite frankly, not worth her time. And those who aren't worth her time will find themselves on the "use at will" list much more quickly than people she can care about.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: I'm picking her up in the time period AFTER the series. By this point, the Twilight incident has been resolved, and she is just settling back into a life of RPGs being mostly harmless.
