Irene should have stayed dead.

I am not a Sherlock/Irene shipper. My impression of the story was that Holmes respected her, only because she got the better of him. He didn’t catch the cat. (What I’m saying there is that cat’s are devilishly hard to catch if they don’t want to be caught.) My impression of Irene Adler from the story was a strong woman who got up early in the ( Read more... )

Hi there. I hope you don't mind if I add my two cents :P

And of course, they were not in love.

In the original story, the day Adler married Norton, Holmes decided to wear the sovereign she gave him on his watch chain "in memory of the occasion". I find it hard to believe a man would wear a souvenir of the day the woman he loves married another man but I'm obviously in the minority.

As regards the end - the whole episode even - have you seen The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (Moffat's favourite adaptation IIRC)?

Hi! Add away, please. The more cents the closer we are to a heavy sock. ;-)

I figured the sovereign was a reminder to himself, maybe along the lines of "don't underestimate women (or anyone) out of hand." That's what I would have used it for, anyway. I see it as a "Norbury" thing.

As to Private Life, yes, I have seen it, but it's been awhile so I'm kinda fuzzy about it. Did you have any particular comparisons in mind?

Also, is it okay if I friend you? I don't have many friends to squee over Holmes with (or rant, as the case my be). :-)

Regarding Private Life, the list of similarities is so long I feel like crying just to think of it. But Moffat has just confirmed on Twitter that it was his favourite film (and Gatiss's too) and that he admitted having inserted references to it in Belgravia. Too bad only a few people spotted them, for they are numerous and decidedly obvious. Not only that, but for me, the film makes it much easier to understand Moffat's views on the characters and his intentions when writing Belgravia.

Also, is it okay if I friend you? I don't have many friends to squee over Holmes with (or rant, as the case my be). :-)

Oh my, I'm incredibly flattered! I'd be delighted if you friended me! ^__^ I'll friend you right back!

Hmm, I'll have to watch that movie again. It's not really one of my favorites, but it's not too cringe-worthy. I'd have to say my favorite, and also what I think is the closest to the flavor of Sherlock Holmes, is the old Ronald Howard and H. Marion Crawford shows. They just remind me so much of the stories: they have a kind of cute, not too serious feel, even though sometimes people die; they're focused more on mystery than drama. But then, my first introduction to SH was through comedy, and since that's the way my personality leans anyway, that's rather how I see the stories.
Anyway, if you know what I'm talking about, well and good. If not, I recommend watching a few episodes of those, if you can catch 'em. Of course, everyone has their own preferences. :)
