I'd presume they are eating hte dead bodies since I could swear I've seen these guys around carrion before. But all the wikipedia/google searching doesn't say anything about them being a carrion kinda bug

It is wise to rake up and remove accumulations of dead bees from around the hives. They can attract scavengers, as you are observing, and also predators. The fungus that causes stonebrood can also grow on them.
