Years ago I had a pink deerhead standing on the shelf above my toilet. One day it broke (I'm not naming names) and ever since I've been looking for a replacement. I couldn't find one anywhere, so finally I figured I could try and make one myself... and that sparkled the prompt I created last November for this year's
spn_reversebang. Jensen is a deer, I turned Jared into a pink unicorn and of course JDM is a bear. *grins* I don't know, okay, I just imagined lots of furry snuggling;)
My prompt was turned into a fluffy fic, woohoo! Find out below if my dreams came true. I was inspired by the story to make additional art and yes, I created papier-mâché animal heads (no pink deer though;). May I present:

Summary: In a world where shifters are ostracized as freaks of nature, Jensen is desperately trying to figure out what the future will hold for him and his shifter form. Eager to learn more about the reclusive shifter society, he finds a secluded resort run by Jeff that caters exclusively as a vacation spot to shifters of all kinds. Even though he is welcomed there with open arms, Jensen soon discovers that Jeff is keeping a big secret: a pink unicorn named Jared.

The Promptpiece
The very first sketch and the final prompt.
Figuring out the different sizes was a challenge, but they ended up fitting together perfectly:)
The Storyheader
The sketches I made for a story header after reading the first story-draft.
A scene with all the shifters at the farm, sadly I lacked the time to turn it into a papercut piece. (After I had read the riding scene, I focused on that instead;)
I also sketched the concept of the animal heads as character cards. More on the papier-mâché below, first I'm doing some papercuts!
Unlike the prompt piece, I didn't use references for the story banner. I just wanted it to look very basic. So I quickly outlined the shapes I had in mind to make a composition.
The Ridingscene
How could I not make a naked Jensen papercut? Oops, spoiler for the story!
I cut the horn out of sparkly paper <3

(Papier-mâché is French for "chewed paper", but I used wallpaper paste:)
The Unicorn
I experimented with adding a cardboard roll for the horn, but as it turn out the appendix of the balloon worked all by itself;)
Pro-tip: don't let your papier-mâché piece dry like this...
... all the water sank to the bottom and couldn't evaporate, so the wet paper was torn. Luckily it forced me to find a fix and I ended up improving the head with a full chin:)
Of course Unicorn!Jared had to have floppy hair.
The Bear
I cut the specific shape of the snout of the bear out of dry floral foam, which I then connected to the head with long pieces of paper.
I used papertape to make curly hair and sideburns:) plus the ears were trimmed into a more furry shape.
The Deer
After playing with balloons, I tried something else for the deerhead:
I made a base out of stuff I found in my arts & crafts supplies
I wasn't happy with the eyes facing front, so I remodelled them a couple of days later. (Once the papier-mâché is dry, you can add new layers) and gave Jensen the lashes he deserves;)

First a layer of gesso, that is supposed to cover all the newspaper and make the paint stick better.
I found the most amazing pink and golden yellow paint, but didn't want to buy a big tube of brown that I wouldn't use for anything beyond this project. So instead I got a pretty fanfiction green (for Jensen's eyes;) and I mixed it with pink to get brown.
I used black marker and white paint for details.
Just wanted to show y'all that I actually braided Jared's mane.
Photoshoot! With and without flash. I really like the shadows the heads created, so I used the version without the flash for the charactercards.
This was the set up: I put the models in front of green paper in my rocking chair with a light from above. It was such fun to play with these guys... (as you can see in the bonus below;)

How to create papier-mâchéThe riding scene is based on a photo from

The picture of Jeff in his plaid shirt is a still from the movie LIVE! (2007,
