Looking Back on 2018 with a flowerparade

Dec 30, 2018 17:39

This was a pretty good year for me. I made a couple of cool trips, hung out with friends and met new people. Here's a picspam that ticks all those boxes: in September I traveled to the South of the Netherlands for the Corso in Zundert, a yearly flower sculpture parade. (I visited it in 2016 as well:) This year I met up there with longtime LJ friend tanisafan and her partner fuluoliang, who both traveled there from Belgium (which was closer than my town!). We had a great time catching up and watching all the awesome flower floats:)

Bloemencorso Zundert, 2 September 2018

We sat in the cheap bleachers, but our seats had a perfect height and a band came along to entertain us while we waited for the parade to start. First up was an hommage to the first parade in Zundert in 1936 which was a girl on a bicyle dressed up with flowers:) Oh, how different today's parade is... Are you ready?

1. Iguana In(ter)action - 't Stuk - Johan Raats, Jack Schetters, Joël Sprenkels & Hans Arnouts
Three glorious iguanas, so very awesome; their movement really looked like they were strolling down the street!

2. Dahlia Harvest - De Berk - Harry van den Broek
3. Overload - Poteind - Marli van Hassel, Lars van Hassel, Kyle Dictus & Wouter Marijnissen

4. Clowing Around - Wernhout - John Kimenai, Pascal Machielsen &n Ronald van der Laag
I am not a fan of clowns, but the details on this one were stunning.

5. Urbanisation - De Lent - Sven Goossens & Ad Bogers
More amazing details on this set of crabs with their shells covered in buildings. *chinhands*

6. Crown Juwel - Raamberg - Yuri Dils
7. Boscherean - Stuivezand - Gerard van Erk & René Jochems

Boscherean was inspired by the weird paintings of Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516)

8. Serene - Rijsbergen - Gijs van den Bemd & René de Theije
These jellyfish were 'floating' serenely up and down.

9. Made in China - Markt - Hans Vriends & Frank van Baal

The creators of this fabulous dragon made up an original fairytale to go along with their sculpture; about a girl stealing the dragon's lollypop:) I loved that curly tail!

10. Explode - Veldstraat - Jos van Aert

From the right angle you were supposedly able to see the full figure of the grenade. We didn't see it, but liked the concept of all the schrapnel pieces forming a complete shape.
The amazing tornado that's coming around the corner was by a group that had previously been forced out of the parade due to stormwinds. This was their revenge design;)

11. Corsornado - Klein Zundertse Heikant - Joost van Puijenbroek & Ad Quirijnen

12. Mother Nature Under Attack - Helpt Elkander - Louisa Joosen
Didn't get a good angle from the bleachers, but managed to take a good photo of the face of Mother Nature when the parade did a second round:

13. Façade - Molenstraat - Robin Schijfs & Gijs Martens
This piece was only viewable from one side and wasn't really a sculpture, but more a wall of dahlias. Very different from the rest.

14. Out of Space - Tiggelaar - Johan van Trijp, Marc van Beek & Freek de Bruijn
The space ship came with a whole parade, such fun!

Unfortunately I never managed to capture the surprise aliens that were hiding in the space ship; you can only just spot one in the photo below;)

15. The Last Yeti - Schijf - Huub van Caam, Maikel van de Korput & Sander van Hooydonk
Such a shame: the Yeti couldn't make it around the corner and couldn't finish the parade, it looked great!

16. Momentum - 't Kapelleke - Yoran Jochems & Wesley van Genk
Momentum was hard to capture in one photo; the pieces looked really dynamic next to each other.

17. Plague Doctor - Klein Zundert - Fedde van Erk & Jorrit Havermans
This one came with ominous music, as you can imagine.

The corpse on the plague doctor's cart was moaning, eeep.
18. Wave - Achtmaal - Marius Arnouts, Patrick Gommers & Maurice Konings

The video is out of focus, but it shows the movement of the wave;)

19. Gold Wood - Laer-Akkermolen - Gianni Ritchie & Jeroen Vriends
This tropical forest hid several creatures that protested loudly when the guy with chainsaw at the bottom threatened to cut the trees.

20. On/Off - Laarheide - Jeremy van Nijnatten
The slighly damaged vacuumcleaner closed the parade.

After that, we climbed down the bleachers and walked back through town while the winner was announced and the parade did a second round to get to the exhibition site.
We got on a bus back to the station and said our goodbyes, ahw. It had been a great day:)

Which one is your favorite? Which one do you think is the winner? (I happened to agree with the jury's choice, I'll tell you in the comments;)
