Sam had managed to avoid watching TV, listening to the radio, or even browsing the Web for the most part pretty successfully for the past couple of weeks. He'd been pulling off this feat of avoidance with what one might almost call a concerted effort, as a matter of fact

Piper had been sitting out on her own porch a few hours after her class ended when she spotted Anders smoking.

"Bad day?" she asked as she wandered over.

Sam shot a listless glance her way and grunted. "No, I do this because it's the only way to express my glee."

"And what is it you're gleeful about?" Piper asked, noting his sarcasm.

Sam didn't answer her right away, choosing instead to inhale a ridiculously long drag of smoke and exhale it forcefully. "Do you know what this week is?"

Sean was walking home after lunch with his head down and his hands in his pockets. He wasn't paying much attention to anything around him -- just enough to make sure he didn't run into anybody or anything.

If he'd been paying more attention, he would've noticed a familiar face sitting on the porch next door.

Sam wasn't paying attention -- at least not enough attention to recognize Sean on sight, but he did notice just enough to sit up and call out, "Hey. Do I know you?"

Sean stopped and looked up. "Holy shit," he said, blinking in surprise. "Anders?"

Sam got a good look at him now, and it surprised him into a short laugh. It was usually a pretty good clue as to where people knew him from when they called him by his last name.

"Sean frakking Nast? Is that you?"
