"Are you okay?" Sam asked again, and gritted his teeth against a residual jolt of pain from the effort of carrying her up the stairs -- not that she was heavy, but he was sadly out of shape after all the time he'd spent injured lately. He shifted closer and buried his face in her hair, holding her as tightly as he dared. "You scared the hell out of me."

She was perhaps trying to make him forget she had almost been killed tonight.

He couldn't forget, and he wanted to believe her. He was kind of pissed off at himself for not being able to simply take her word for it. But Cole had almost killed her tonight, and nearly killed both of them several times before, and he'd never wanted to believe that Cole would ever be capable of doing that, ever.
