He and Phoebe had spent all day taking turns at keeping Cole distracted from the birthday party preparations going on, but now dinner was on the table, the bedroom had been done up with the new satin sheets, presents had been wrapped, and there were candles everywhere

Phoebe gave him a nervous smile as she came in and went to her chair. She stood behind it for a moment and took a deep breath.

"Hey, Cole? Love, can you come in here for a minute, please?"

"What is it?" Cole said, walking into the dining room. He stopped and stared. He knew Sam had been making dinner, but he wasn't expecting all this. "What. . . .?" he said.

Sam exchanged a brief glance with Phoebe, grinning at Cole's reaction. "Happy birthday."

"Happy birthday, sweetheart."

The bedroom, as soon as they were done, was lit entirely by the several dozen softly flickering candles set up around the room, illuminating the bed, done up with new and particularly luxurious-looking pillows and deep red satin sheets, and the rented hot tub that now occupied the corner where the armchair and bookcase normally were.

There were several more wrapped boxes, as well, and a bottle of champagne chilling in a bucket of ice next to three flutes.

Phoebe stood quietly next to Cole, watching and feeling his reaction as he took everything in. She was a little bit nervous - hoping he would enjoy what they had done.

Cole stared. "Wow," he said, turning in a circle to take in the whole room. "How did you get a hot tub up here without me noticing?"

"Wasn't easy," Sam said. "Distracting you and getting you out of the house that long? But it was worth it, I think."

He trailed his fingers across Cole's stomach, grinning. "Want to try it out?"
