He felt ridiculous.

He probably should have known better than to let Coraline choose the bathing costume. If he had known better, maybe he wouldn't have ended up in a bikini with a ladybird pattern but at least, in letting her chose, he'd avoided the box giving him an endless string of suits similiar to ones Fiona had worn ( Read more... )

When you're used to being hit over the head with the bad side of fate, it can be pretty weird to actually not suffer, particularly considering what I'd heard about the island's dark side. It hadn't taken long to discover before even getting a cup of coffee in the morning that I was lucky to still have my body as it was (even with hopeless entropy wired into my genes, even slowly falling apart).

I was only disappointed from a scientific point of view, mostly because I'd played the butch even with long hair enough times. It seemed like a good idea to avoid people, though, and so I headed down to the beach, a girl and black and white swimwear and a towel. (And sunscreen. If I was going to die, it was not going to be from melanoma. Not in a place with this kind of medical facility.) It was just unfortunate that someone--a girl I didn't know--had beaten me there first.

It's hard to be a stone bitch when there are only four hundred people around and everyone knows where you live. I waved.

Decisions, decisions.

For a moment, Adam did consider playing games, pretending to be someone else entirely, but then he remembered promising Angela that he wouldn't, and this wasn't any different.

He raised his hand and waved, pushing his hair back from his face.

"Morning, Hadley."

Suffice it to say, some blond woman wearing a bikini with ladybugs on it who knew my name...certainly upped the weird quotient of the day a little. It freaked me out, for a moment or two, before I put the pieces together. And started laughing, dropping my towel down by hers and sitting down in the sand, looking at her...him...Adam.

"Oh my god, Carter. No shit."

"No shit, but rather impressive breasts, if I do say so myself."

She was just going to have to take his word for it, though, because, right then, Adam was quite happy hiding.

"I've already had Coraline thinking that this is the funniest thing ever so I could do without you too."

"Oh my twitchy witchy girl, I think you are so nice, I give you bowls of poridge and I give you bowls of ice... cream." Coraline sang as she walked up the beach with her bowl of water for the moat of the sandcastle she had built. Adam had his-her-his, so confusing, back to Coraline and kept kicking his-her-his legs in the air. "I give you lots of kisses and I give you lots of hugs. But I never give you sandwiches with bugs...in."

Coraline paused behind were the currently girl spy was lying. Really, if there was any time to be mischievious it was when Adam would be slightly slower. "Adam?" Coraline said innocently before she threw the water at him. "Ooops."

Adam had turned enough that the water caught him full in the face and chest and, for a moment, all that he ould do was gasp and spit saltwater.

"That's it," he said, scrambling to his feet. "I'm going to drown you, you brat."

"You can try Captain Slow," Coraline said grinning at Adam's water covered face. Coraline paused for maybe two seconds as he-she-Adam scrambled to his feet, Coraline dropped the bowl into the sand and ran. She definitely had the advantage now over Adam and his new body. This was fun. "Can't catch me! I'm Cora the Explorer and you're just a slow girl."

Adam was still quick but he was slower and off balance in the new body, his breasts bouncing uncomfortably in the halterneck swimsuit. His wet hair clung to the side of his face.

"You met Ros. You think she was just a slow girl?" he called. "What about Sarah? Slow girl too?"

"It really is cute," I said, a while later, offering out the plaid skirt, white shirt, and blazer to the girl version of Adam. I had managed to plaster a very innocent look on my face. "It looks like it's the right size."

Of course I'd looked more than was strictly necessary.

In the privacy of his own home, Adam had very little shame. He took the clothing from Remy and turned it over in his hands.

"What? You didn't bring underwear too?"

I gave him a slightly disgusted look. "Adam, I like you a lot, but I am damned if I am going to pick out panties for you," I said, and crossed my arms, leaning against the hut wall.

"You draw the line at knickers, but you're fine about getting me to dress up as a school girl?"

Adam grinned.

"You're a contradiction in terms, Hadley."
