i like the two flies with the bee as a sort of focal point. i wouldn't want to rot to be overwhelming

Actually, I don't think that it would change the focal point that much as the actual entire framework of the subject.

Instead of being a simplistic rotting pear, it'd be more of a complete life cycle.

Right now you have three insects feasting upon the rotting pear. While this sends a subtle dark message, more insects actually propagating around an even more rotten piece of fruit and breeding upon it would bring everything full-tilt oroborus.
