The hard drive should be removable in that model, so it may not be a drive issue. Gabe upgraded the hard drive in his model of the same, but it's really starting to show its age, sadly - shutting off at random, etc. 10 years is a decently long time for a gaming console that got a lot of use.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's problems with the soldering in the motherboard. The first gen PS3s were not nearly as bad as the first gen 360s, but it still seems to be a common issue after this many years. Cheap workmanship and years of intense heating and cooling... Also, if it was a drive problem, I think it would at least boot to an error screen.
Ironically I had just been shopping hard drives to upgrade mine. I guess it's good it failed when it did instead of right after blowing $40-$460.
My (also first gen) PS2 also died after ten years or so. Which is a fair run, but of course I have to wish it was a little longer. Another year or two and "just give up having a PS3" would be a much easier choice to make, but there are a couple more games I want to play from that generation, and it sucks having just got a PS+ subscription.
So is Gabe going to replace his or just move on to other consoles?
