Ew! My grandpa just tried to feed me avocado.

I don't even know what kind of perverted demon spawn avocado is conjured from.

Okay, and aside from the fact that it tastes fucking gross, wikipedia just gave me four more damn good reasons not to eat the shit ( Read more... )

Not a huge avocado fan here, but they're not THAT bad. I find #4 very hard to believe considering the sheer poundage a couple of my grandparents' dogs used to eat. Yeah, the dogs are dead now, but they died of old age. Then again, one of them also ate an entire box of chocolates (box included) and a telephone, so she might not be entirely representative of what's safe to eat...

Avocado is the food of the Gods.

I have a recipe on page 207 of "The best of Jackie French" for Avocado dog food. And I'm sure I remember reading in one of her books somewhere that her cows adn the wombats eat avocado's too. I feed avocado to my chooks and they do alright. Maybe it's the seed that's toxic, kinda like apples.

Avocado toxicity is concentrated in the leaves, pit, and skin of the fruit. The tests for toxicity that I could find in 4 reports of tests in a lookup on Medline by someone else were done with leaves. Tomato and potato leaves are also toxic.

Avocado, the fruit, is not toxic to dogs. Some dog foods, such as Avoderm, (http://www.breeders-choice.com/avoderm.htm) contain avocado. Avocado, being high in fat, is good for the skin.

I have heard reports of avocado tree owners stating that their dog eats fallen avocado freely with no ill effects, having learned not to eat the skin or pit. Although, this should be taken with a grain of salt--chocolate is also toxic to dogs, yet medium to large dogs can tolerate an amount of chocolate.

Bananas are picked when quite green and ripen much later, in the store or in your kitchen. Avocado similarly ripens off the tree.
