my fridge always, always smells like rotting basil. i'm really not sure why this is. yes, i go through a lot of basil, but it could be a week or more since i've had any in the fridge, and the fridge will still reek of it. i just took out a block of expensive cheese i'd splurged on and had really been looking forward to enjoying, and even though it ( Read more... )

Then only one explanation is left: basil ghosts

or that someone has deviously woven basil fibers into the plastic material of my fridge.

it lasts longer in the fridge. i store it standing up in water in the fridge. when i buy a bunch, i often use it over the course of two or three days, unless i'm making something that requires a huge quantity. once it starts to wilt/rot, though, i throw it away! so why the smell!

yeah i have had this problem before, too. it is hellums nastums. you know, if you hang basil upside down in a dry place (not your fridge), it will dry instead of rotting, and dried basil is still totally usable (that's what you get in the jars you can buy in the spice section at the grocery store).

i've never used dried basil before! whole dried herbs (like, as in, not finely minced and disguised/rehydrated in a sauce or something) freak me out. it's the texture. i agree that the problem is hellums nastums!

Clearly, you need both an old priest and a young priest.

Grow your own goddamned basil already. It's easier than making pie (maybe even easier than eating pie!), and nothing beats pesto made with freshly-picked basil leaves. Best of all, you'll never need to put it in the fridge. Ever.

PROBLEM RESOLVED, CRISIS AVERTED

i agree with both of you that growing my own would be the best solution. however, the only growing space i have is a tiny, tiny balcony, and i just feel like that's so fucking sad... to grow herbs on a tiny balcony. an admission to myself that i'm confined in an urban prison. up until this point, i've been waiting until i can make a proper herb garden in the ground. that day will come, not too far in the future, but maybe you're right. perhaps in the meantime i should be growing my own.

it's mainly that i feel like i'll be abusing the plants by confining them to my tiny, awful balcony. i've got this holdover belief from childhood that every living thing has a soul.

i always used to get upset and cry a little when adrian would stick knives into trees, because science class told me they were alive and they bled and all. then he would stick it in further and laugh to torment me some more.
i'd go back later and climb the tree and secretly hug it where he had cut it when he wasn't looking.
