He would be lying if he denied the smile growing inside his chest and threatening to spill onto his face. Hell, it wasn’t a smile, it was a grin, and no one besides Jim and Joanna had seen his grin in years. He wasn’t about to show a whole goddamn wedding party.
Oh, god. A wedding party.
Bones took a deep breath, steadying himself as he examined his reflection in the mirror. He wasn’t seeing anything new. Old eyes stuck in a young face, prematurely graying hair at the temples and the tell-tale twitching at the corners of his mouth. Every twitch showed the shadow of a dimple, the dimples Jim liked to kiss when he was feeling especially sentimental.
A knock came at the door. “Daddy?”
“Come on in, darlin’.”
Joanna entered, her petite body dressed in a white and green dress. Her hair had been arranged into perfect ringlets, a small white flower pinning the curls away from her face. She smiled happily up at her father, and Bones felt the moment that he gave into his grin.
“You look nice, Daddy.”
“So do you,” Bones replied. “What’s going on out there?”
Joanna shrugged. “I guess they’re almost ready for you.”
“You guess?”
“I guess I could check again?”
Bones just smiled and patted her on the head.
“Don’t mess up my hair, Daddy!”
“Sorry, darlin’. Now why don’t you go check and see what’s happening?”
Joanna smiled again and fluttered back out the door, closing it too loudly in her childish exuberance. Bones just grinned again, too happy to be annoyed by much.
He fiddled around with his bowtie a bit more, but that was just something to busy his hands. He paced for a few moments, too much energy coiled inside of him. Eventually, he collapsed onto one of the room’s armchairs, waiting for word from Joanna.
Eventually, there was another knock.
“Come on in, darlin’!” Bones called over the back of the chair. He didn’t bother turning around as the door opened and shut. “What did you find out?”
There was no answer, and Bones was just about to turn around when two hands came over to cover his eyes.
“Guess who.”
“Jim!” Bones said, “What are you doing here? You’re not supposed to see me, it’s bad luck!”
“Does that mean you’re the bride?” Bones could hear the smirk in Jim’s voice. “Besides, I can’t see you, just the top of your head.”
“Well, shut your eyes,” Bones grumbled.
“Fine. They’re shut.”
“Promise?”
“Yes,” Jim took his hands off of Bones’ eyes. “Shut yours, too.”
Bones grunted assent and shut his eyes. He couldn’t see anything, but he could hear when Jim moved around the other side of the chair, and the slight stumble in his step that convinced Bones he really did have his eyes closed. Then, Bones felt Jim’s presence very near to him, right beside his face, and he knew if he turned his head he could capture Jim’s lips with his own.
“I can’t wait to get hitched to you, Bones,” Jim whispered in his ear. He kissed the delicate shell of Bones’ ear. “I’ve waited long enough for this.”
“Yeah,” Bones murmured. “Me, too.”
“I should probably leave. It’s almost ready to start.”
“All right. I’ll see you out there.”
“Mhm,” Jim agreed, nuzzling against Bones’ face. “Don’t open your eyes.”
Bones studiously kept his eyes closed until he heard Jim close the door behind him and then opened them with a sigh. Joanna’s head popped through a different door just then, the door that would lead him onto the altar.
“Daddy, almost ready. Wait for the music.” Then she was gone.
Bones sighed at the vagueness, but the twitching was back at the corners of his mouth. He barely had a second to stand and adjust his tux before the music started and he opened the door on autopilot, butterflies in his stomach but then he saw Jim open the door opposite from him.
It was only natural to move forward then, towards Jim. Jim was grinning like a loon as they met in the middle, right in front of Spock.
And yes, for the record, Bones had fought tooth and nail for Spock to not be the one to marry him and Jim, but Jim had fought just as hard, and more effectively with well-placed lips and soft smiles, so Spock it was.
“Please be seated,” Spock announced dispassionately, and the music ceased.
Bones joined hands with Jim and glanced quickly over the assembled people inside the small chapel. The crew was all there-Uhura, Chekov, Sulu, Scotty, Chapel, a smattering of others-all arranged without adherence to the traditional sides. He turned back and refocused on Jim as Spock began to speak.
“It is logical to assume we are all here to witness the marriage of James T. Kirk and Leonard H. McCoy.”
Jim looked like he would start snickering any moment, either from Spock’s unique ceremony or the fact that Bones’ eyes were threatening to roll out of his head.
“These two men share something that beings throughout the universe are searching for. For many, the search ends in vain, but these two have found it in each other.”
Bones allowed himself to look mildly surprised at Spock’s rather sensitive words. Jim just smiled happily over at Spock before turning back to Bones.
“Love is not taken lightly in any known civilization. Perhaps one day we will discover a world where love is ignored, but we need only introduce them to Jim and Leonard to prove to them its importance.”
Geez, did Spock study poetry or something in preparation for this? Bones figured that he probably did, it was something Spock would do.
“I know that the assembled beings here are all fully supportive of Jim and Leonard. We have all witnessed, to some extent, the depth of their emotion for each other. In the face of dangerous missions, hostile environments, slim odds, and the challenge of tolerating one another for prolonged periods of time, they continued to love.”
The last was delivered a touch sarcastically, and a good-natured murmur of laughter swept over the chapel. Dammit, there was that twitching again.
“Jim and Leonard have chosen to recite their own vows.” Spock motioned to Jim to begin.
Jim didn’t need any notes to do this. He looked square into Bones’ eyes and began.
“Bones, I remember the first time I met you. I thought you might be insane, and I liked you almost immediately. You were just as off-balance as I was, and I could see myself being with you. I just wanted to be close to you. You made me feel safe.
“And three years at the Academy only made me want you more. I’ll never forget the moment I knew I was in love with you. It was when you got assigned to the Enterprise and I was stuck on the ground because someone got me put on academic probation.” Here Jim paused to look pointedly at Spock, to another chorus of chuckles. Spock just raised an eyebrow.
“And then you walked away from me, and I was miserable. Miserable because I wasn’t going into space, and even more miserable because you were leaving. I couldn’t imagine not going with you. You would be light years away, and I didn’t think I could stand it. And then you snuck me on board the Enterprise, and I thought maybe you could love me, too.
“It’s been so long since that moment, Bones, and I still remember it. It was the beginning of a whole new life for me-a life aboard the Enterprise, and a life where I was madly in love with my best friend. No one was more surprised than me the first time we kissed.
“Even now, I can’t really believe any of this is happening, because things don’t usually work out this well. Life isn’t supposed to arrange itself so perfectly. I just can’t wait to be married to you, Bones.
“And I know the point of vows is to actually vow something, and I’m just talking about how in love with you I am, so I’ll just cut to it. Bones, I vow to keep trying your patience. I vow to irritate you and bother you when you’re busy. I vow to love you until the day I die. I vow to never leave you, and to never let you leave me.”
Jim’s face became more serious as he continued, so that when he finally finished his smile had dropped completely, replaced with an earnest, sincere gaze. Bones stared at him for a moment, unable to think about anything except for Jim’s words, things he had never heard before and never wanted to forget. Bones realized that it was now his turn, so he cleared his throat self-consciously and tried to remember what he had planned.
“Jim, I-.” His brain stuttered, and his voice followed. He looked back up into Jim’s eyes, gazing at him blue and intent, and he figured, fuck it, I’ll fucking wing it.
“Jim, you’re perfect for me,” Bones said, and there was Jim’s smile again. “I thought that the first time I met you, and you weren’t put off by my ravings. And it’s not my nature to seek people out, so boy was I glad when you started trailing me around, forcing your way into my life.
“I liked it. I liked having you around, and with few exceptions, I don’t typically like people hanging around me. But you felt right being near to me, and I always felt worse when you were gone. And yeah, sometimes you did irritate me and you still do, and when you have a crazy idea in your head I never get a lick of work done, but even if I make a fuss I don’t really mind. I never like saying no to you.
“Which I guess is what led us up to this point, getting married. It’s another of your ideas that I couldn’t deny, that I didn’t want to deny because I want to get married to you. I feel like we’ve been working up to this since we laid eyes on each other.
“All I can vow to you are the things I’ve given you for years-patience, forgiveness, unconditional love, and heaps of inoculations. I vow to be grumpy and angry at times, but I vow that I’ll never stop wanting you as my husband.”
Jim’s smile was radiant once again. Spock reached into his own pocket and held out the rings. Bones and Jim slipped them on each other’s fingers. Spock spoke again.
“It is customary now to kiss.”
Jim and Bones needed no further prompting, Jim’s hand coming to frame Bones’ cheek and Bones winding his arms around Jim’s back. The kiss was sweet and brief (Joanna was present after all; she didn’t need to see her father devouring Jim’s face).
When they pulled away, to the applause of their friends and family, Bones was grinning, wedding guests be damned. Jim couldn’t help but lean in again and kiss one of Bones’ dimples, but it was okay, because Bones was feeling rather sentimental as well.
“By the way, Bones,” Jim murmured in his husband’s ear before pulling away, “my eyes were open the whole time.”
