Confused by Facebook

I signed up for Facebook.   Not sure why, but I think someone convinced me I should.  I can't figure out how it works, yet.  More importantly, I'm finding myself in a moral dilemma.  I get the whole social networking / reconnect with lost friends thing.  And I'm cool with that.  There are a number of people with whom I've lost touch.  But I'm

Yeah, Facebook friends are not actually "friends". It's more like, I met you once and you seemed like you weren't a total douche.

Some of the college kids I know friend everyone they've ever met, so they're up above 1000.
